Chapter Ten
Sienna pressed the health potion against Maxillenitaneousâs lips, and slowly, he came back around, his eyes widening as the cut to his head stitched itself together.
âThe others?â He wheezed, trying to twist his neck to look back toward the platform.
I shook my head, and he looked away. âIâm sorry. It was too late.â
He sighed and pushed himself to a sitting position, his arms almost buckling under the strain. âWe must return them to the stone before we leave.â
âIâm sorry,â I admitted, âbut Iâm not sure how to do that.â
He shook his head, his eyes downcast in sorrow. âHelp me up, please. I can perform the ritual. But we mustnât delay.â
I leaned closer and offered my hand. He grasped my wrist, small fingers digging in as I lifted him to his feet.
âMaxillenitaneous, how can we help?â
He shook his head. âJust Max is fine. I understand you surface dwellers have simpler names. Not like we kwells.â
I made sure to hide my relief. âSo, Max, what can we do?â
âIf you can carry their bodies to me here, I will take care of the rest.â
Max stood where he had fallen, only now facing away from the stone doors. I passed him by, Ella back in elven form at my side, and we entered the stone platform, bending and gently lifting the two broken bodies into our arms. They weighed barely anything.
As we returned, the kwell gently shook his head before closing his hand into a tight fist and beating it twice against his chest, the sound echoing softly off the walls.
âPlease, here.â He gestured to the ground at his feet, and we placed the bodies down before taking a few steps back, joining Elandra once again and Sienna who had just walked through to join us from the main chamber.
We watched on silently as Max knelt beside each figure, carefully removing the bag each carried on their hip and placing it on their chest before folding their arms across the top.
The kwell then placed his palms against the stone floor. A humming sounded, surprisingly deep for the tiny figure before us, and the stone beneath his palms rippled as the temperature of the air became warm, then hot, almost unbearable.
The cadence of his humming changed, speeding up, and the ground eased aside to allow the bodies to sink into the floor, the stone pulling them into its embrace before covering them over and solidifying once again.
Once they disappeared from view, the humming stopped, and Max pushed himself to his feet, shaking slightly.
âDo you wish to say any words?â I asked.
The kwell shook his head. âNo need for words. The stone knows all, Great One. Now, we must get moving.â
âCan you tell us more about the danger?â Sienna asked.
âWith a few quick alterations to the mechanics, the platform will take fewer than two hours to reach the floor below. If it is okay with the Great Ones, we shall talk as we descend.â
Sienna looked at me, and I shrugged as Max pulled a series of small tools from the bag at his waist and moved toward the platformâs visible mechanisms.
