Perseus dropped Medusa’s head into his magical purse. It closed around the head. There was nothing to fear from Medusa now. At that moment the other two Gorgons awoke. Horrified at the sight of Perseus, they tried to fight him. But Perseus slipped his magical cap onto his head. He became invisible, and the monsters could not find him.

Happy and proud, Perseus returned to his tiny fishing village. He expected to find his mother married and living happily with Polydectes. Instead, his mother was missing. Polydectes had become terrible and cruel to those who lived on the island. Perseus was furious.

“I know what I must do,” Perseus said to himself. He went to Polydectes’s palace. Perseus entered the front hall and slammed the door. He stood at the entrance, holding Athena’s shield on his chest. The silver purse with Medusa’s head was at his side. Every man in the hall, including Polydectes, looked at him.

Before anyone could look away, Perseus held up Medusa’s head in front of him. In that moment the cruel king and all his servants turned to stone. Perseus quickly placed Medusa’s head back in the silver purse.

The people who lived on the island celebrated. They were free from the cruel king.

But Perseus was not celebrating. He still could not find his mother.

“She went into hiding after you left,” explained one of the villagers.

“She refused to marry Polydectes. She said she did not love him. And so he threatened to kill her,” said another.

News traveled fast throughout the island. Danae learned that Perseus had turned Polydectes into stone. She finally came out of hiding. Mother and son were happily reunited. They were never separated again for the rest of their lives.
