Turkish gulets are still made from wood but a diesel engine is preferred to sail for most.

WHO WERE THE LYCIANS?
Many of the ancient sites you see in this part of Turkey look like Greek or Roman ruins, but they are more likely to be ancient Lycian remains. Lycia was made up of a string of prosperous and powerful cities, which first became established on the Anatolian seaboard in the 6th century BC and profited from the trade of the busy sea route that skirted the coast. Though wealthy, the Lycians suffered from the constant battles between the Persians and Greeks, finally succumbing to the Romans and becoming part of the empire.
