Eric eventually woke up after a day or two in the infirmary, and for the most part, I stayed at his side. Jackson and Molly looked for some sort of clue in his room to see what happened.

We managed to get some video footage of Eric returning home shortly after he left my apartment, however we didn’t see anything or anyone suspicious.

Empty handed again, I was becoming more and more frustrated as the hours went by. I had a feeling these attacks were Angelique and her minions, and if it were up to me, I would have headed to her home by now and set it alight.

“Hayley.”

Breathless and with his eyes finally open, Eric reached out an unsteady hand for mine, and I took his a little too quickly and not as gently as I would have liked.

“What happened?”

“We were hoping you could tell us.” I replied with worry in my voice. “You scared us all.”

“I remember leaving your apartment and getting back to the manor but,” He paused, looking away from me as if trying to recall some memory. “No, there’s a blank, as if someone has wiped my mind clear.”

“A vampire, we suspect a vampire broke in, attacked you, drained you of nearly all your blood, and they must have used their mind control magic on you.”

Standing up, I felt that same anger I felt after reading my mother’s letter,

“For fuck’s sake! This can’t be happening.”

“Hayley, I’m ok. I feel fine.”

“Of course, you’re ok. If it wasn’t for me finding you when I did, we’d be burning your body right about now.” I felt the lump appear in my throat as I thought about it, a funeral.

“So, I’m not?”

“A vampire, no. The doctors couldn’t find any traces of the vampire gene, and Jackson used some sort of spell that removed any traces, I think.”

Leaning against the edge of the door, I felt the world resting on my shoulders, but a part of me was glad that Eric had woken up and was not a creature of the night, otherwise, we would be having a totally different conversation. I knew he would never want to harm another human being but the thirst for blood would overcome his soul, and he would be damned.

“I will get Jackson to come and see if we can remove the memory spell from you. I am glad you’re ok, you made me worried.”

“Ha, you can’t get rid of me that easily.” He winked at me as he pushed himself up a little more, wincing at his aches and pains, but before I could go over to help him, he held his hand up to stop me. “I think I’ve been a damsel in distress long enough, I appreciate you coming to my rescue, but I can look after myself from here.”

“I know you can, but I can help.”

“No, thank you. I will be alright. That's what you always say. Now, rather than stay here with me, why don’t you go and help the others find the bastard who attacked me.
