Chapter 12

“No,” I said. “She can’t be dead. I felt her pulse. She was breathing.”

“The Harvest Ceremony drained too much of her life force,” Tia said. “She is gone.”

Mallory stalked away from the group of girls and kicked over one of the cafeteria tables, sending it crashing to the floor. She picked up one of the fallen plastic chairs and hurled it at the wall. As the chair bounced off the wall and skidded over the floor, Mallory stormed out of the room.

I went after her but Felicity grabbed my arm. “Let her go, Alec. She needs some time alone.”

I shook her hand away, my own anger rising. We’d done everything right and managed to get to the ceremonial chamber before the yaghul had completed the Harvest, but we’d still lost Nicola. Maybe if we’d just got there a few minutes earlier…

“Alec,” Tia said, putting a gentle hand on my shoulder. “Will you walk with me back to my quarters? I need to rest.”

“Yes, of course.”

We left the cafeteria and made our way to the exit. Tia kept her hand on my shoulder and as we walked along the academy corridor, her touch became heavier and I realized she was leaning on me.

“You’re not okay, are you?” I said.

She grimaced. “Not really. As I said, I need rest. I wanted you to walk with me because we need to talk.”

“Okay, I’m listening.” As she leaned against me more heavily, I put an arm around her waist to support her.

We left the main building and walked across the gravel to the path that led to the houses that would soon serve as accommodation for the academy staff.

“I will not be able to accompany you for a while,” Tia said. “It was my greatest wish to help you defeat Rekhmire but now I realize that cannot be so.”

“If it’s a matter of time, we can wait for you to recover your energy,” I said. “There’s no sign of Rekhmire at the moment, anyway.”

“No, it is not simply a matter of time. By the time Rekhmire reveals himself, I may have recovered enough to fight him, but there is more to it than that. I cannot be nearby if you cast the anti-magic spell again. It will destroy me.”

“Yeah, I get that. And that’s why you stayed back in the labyrinth while Mallory and I went ahead. If you need to do that again and keep your distance while I—“

“No,” she said, cutting me off. “The Melandra Configuration is much more powerful than you suspect. It spread further than you intended and it will probably do so again. It is beyond your control, Alec.”

She was right about that. I’d wanted the spell to be contained within the ceremonial room, yet it seemed to have spread throughout the entire labyrinth.

“I cannot be around you as long as there is a possibility that you will use the anti-magic spell,” she said. “It is too dangerous.”

“I understand. But I’m going to miss having you on the team.
