Chapter 15
I cringed as Owen strode forward, terrified he'd over heard Parrish and I discussing things. I pulled myself to a stand, ready to bolt up the stairs and shut myself in the attic if I had to.
"Nice job," he said to Parrish as he looked down at Trish's inert body. I thought I saw his mouth twitch, but he covered it with a whistle, the way a man might if he was impressed by something pretty horrible. Which the sight of Trish was. I couldn't bring myself to look in her direction.
"I can't say I'm unhappy to see you," Parrish said, moving aside as Owen approached Trish and leaned over to examine her. "Things got a bit hairy here. Layne broke in andâ"
"I know," he said, interrupting her. "Some of the pack have him in hand now. We caught him as he ran out the front."
Parrish didn't miss a beat. She cocked her hip and gestured toward the dead feral wolf on the floor as though she didn't know Owen had been the one to make her. If she was worried he'd overheard anything, she didn't let on.
"You've been here all this time and didn't bother to come in and give us a hand here?" She planted one hand on her hip and used the other to gesture at Trish's body as she faced him, all pretense of submission gone from her features. She was pissed and obviously didn't have it in her to pretend otherwise.
Owen pulled a tissue from his pocket as he crouched next to Trish and poked at her neck with a tissue-covered finger. "Not that it's any of your concern, but I haven't been here 'all this time'. We arrived with the van just as Layne was bolting out the front like his ass was on fire." He looked up at her. "What did you do to him, Parrish? I wanted you to choral him for me, not send him racing for lands unknown." He sent a fleeting look up the stairs at me but dismissed me just as quickly.
I breathed a quiet breath of relief. Still clinging to the railing, I decided it was best if I stayed where I was and let Parrish handle things. She seemed to have them under control.
"And exactly what happy happenstance do we owe that brought you and the enforcers here to Brie's shop at this time of day?" She narrowed her gaze at him, and if I'd had been on the other end of that look, I'd have cringed.
Owen flicked out the tissue and stood. He faced her with the same equanimity she gave him. Fear wasn't something I believe Owen ever felt, but in that moment, he gave off an air of guilt that was akin to fear. Fear of discovery. His lips compressed and he hunched inward, defensively. A twitch in Parrish's cheek told me she'd noticed it too.
"Happenstance had nothing to do with it, did it, Brie?" he said and turned to look up at me.
