Rather than go to her bed where she is normally shown masturbating, Ariel remains seated at her desk and combines the motions, bodily position, and writing tool (the ink and rapidograph) with bringing herself to orgasm. “Coming” can mean both arriving at a conclusion in creating her comics and climaxing sexually. The boundary between body and body of work is blurred by the pulsating pen, the ink of which flows uncontrollably onto both page and vagina. By blending ink with her bodily fluids, she explicitly gestures toward the indexicality of her comics. The ink now mixes her “down there” into the drawings, making them signs that not only represent her thoughts and memories, but also present her body—they are a sign of her once being there.46 Ariel’s body becomes a metaphor for the comics and vice versa, concretized by the next frame on the following page, in which Sally responds to her thoughts and says: “I want to lick ink out of you.”
