Eighteen
Carriage after carriage pulled up the castle roadway for the festivities that evening. I watched from one of the castle sitting rooms, a nervousness building inside me as I waited to head down to the party.
âLittle Bear?â Oli entered the room, startling me from my gazing. He was dressed up that night, wearing a crisp black tunic and matching black trousers. His weapons were draped impressively from his belt while his red cloak graced his strong shoulders. Heâd slicked back his wild golden curls away from his face. He looked older, more mature.
âYou really are beautiful,â I said and couldn't help but smile thinking back to the conversation Iâd had with Jasper earlier that day.
âBeautiful?â Oli asked, looking at me with a puzzled expression.
âNever mind.â I shook my head and chuckled softly. âYouâve really outdone yourself.â
He sat beside me on the loveseat. âI could say the same for you.â He eyed my sparkling red dress and didnât look away for a moment.
Jasper had helped me curl my hair high atop my head and several soft tendrils fell loose around my face, tickling my cheeks. Sheâd put on matching red lipstick along with dark shadow onto my eyelids. He seemed to be admiring her handy work.
âAre you ready for this?â I asked him and watched the determination in his eyes waver slightly.
âI guess, and you?â he replied.
I slowly shook my head. âI don't know...â I said honestly, not as confident as I had felt earlier that day.
âLittle Bear, Iâm sorry about the way I acted in the gardens. And for not telling you sooner about the betrothal.â
I shook my head at him, stopping him from going further. âItâs okay, Oli.â
Iâd had two weeks to be angry, and I was exhausted from holding grudges. I decided it was easier to let it go. The betrothal was out of my control and one day heâd have to tell me about the curse and my mother. Oli couldnât keep such secrets from me forever.
The moon was beginning to set into the night sky, and I sat patiently, looking down every so often to my mother's book clutched in my lap. Oli gave me a longing glance, like he wanted to say something, but then didnât.
âI better go. Iâll see you down there?â He stood and began making his way toward the door.
âYeah, Iâll see you down there.â
I waited to hear the door close behind him before returning to the page that was open on my lap. This particular part of the story had a picture of the princess defeating the dragon king. Around her neck was the magical amulet, the dragon king slain at her feet. The dragon was painted with scales the color of ebony and two daunting horns sprouted from his large head. I was admiring the picture, not thinking much of it, when I saw something I hadn't noticed before. My heart skipped a beat, and I clutched the book closer. Leaning in to see the amulet around the princess's neck. I felt my breath hitch.
