She was sitting at the nurse’s station, filling in a heap of paperwork her predecessor had left for her. She sighed. It was cold up here on the border, with a bitter wind sweeping down from the North. Earlier, they'd warned the staff of the possibility of an attack. An officer, a captain turned up, carrying a bulging briefcase, and wearing the flashes of Army intelligence. No doubt he wanted people to understand the briefcase held vital secret documents, although she doubted it. Probably his lunch, and a portable games console to while away the boring hours while on duty in this desolate place.

"Captain Walker, prepare your staff to evacuate at a moment's notice. We had reports of a small-scale attack further along the border. Probably North Korean Special Forces, and it's the kind of thing they do from time to time. But just in case, make sure you’re ready.”

"What's the likelihood, Captain?"

"My guess is nothing is gonna happen, and we’ll be safe. But carry your sidearm at all times, and a bug out pack. You may need to leave in a matter of minutes. Seconds even, if they come."

She pointed at the soldier lying on the bed. “What about my patient? He comes along, no matter what. Even then, moving him could cause him some problems. Perhaps it would be best to move him to the hospital in the rear."

He shook his head. "There’s no time. We have reinforcements moving up to the border, and the roads are clogged. And you can forget a helicopter. We need to keep the skies clear, so if we see anything flying at low level, we know it’s a hostile."

He left then and ran to his Humvee to drive to the next part of the line. She made herself stay calm and walked to where two of her nurses were chatting about their plans for the weekend in Seoul.

"You can forget all that. We’re on alert."

She told them about the outside possibility of an attack, and when she mentioned the likelihood of an evacuation, their faces fell.

"Is this for real, Captain? We've been planning the civil trip for a long time."

"It's for real. Make sure you have a weapon, and prepare the patient for an urgent transfer. Spread the word to the rest of the staff, and I'll talk to the doctor and make sure he understands."

"Dr. Morrison isn't here."

She looked at the girl. “Where is he?"

“I guess you need to know. Some of us had a bit of a party, and he tied a few on. He’s still in bed."

The stupid bastard!

"Get him out of bed, into uniform, and tell him what I just told you. Move it. We don't want to wind up in a North Korean prison camp."

They didn't need convincing, and she went to rouse the doctor.

Lucy stared at the nurse. “Prepare the patient, and hurry.”

She turned away. There was an established routine of tasks to perform, all of it written down in a file inside her office, an Army manual of how to evacuate a clinic when under attack.
