Abbreviations You May Encounter
M.D.: Medical doctorâAn individual who has had four years training in an accredited medical school. To be awarded an M.D., specific tests must be passed. Before practicing, an additional training period or internship is required. To specialize in a branch of medicine, three or more years of additional training or residency are required and tests, called boards, must be passed.
D.O.: OsteopathâAn individual who graduated from a four-year school of osteopathy. Some states allow D.O.s to receive a doctor of medicine degree, if tests are taken and passed. The D.O. can then apply to a program for additional training or residency in a medical school to complete board requirements in a specific field of medicine.
Ph.D.: Doctor of philosophyâThese individuals may teach in a college or university and may be licensed psychologists.
Board Certified: Specific tests in a specialty have been passed after the required training in a particular field of medicine has been completed.
Board Eligible: Specialized training has been received, but board examinations have not been taken or passed.
D.C.: Doctor of chiropractic (chiropractor)âThese individuals specialize in joint and spinal alignment.
P.A.: Physicianâs AssistantâTo be certified as a P.A., the individual must have had a training course and pass certain tests. They are not nurses.
N.P.: Nurse PractitionerâIs a registered nurse with additional training of variable length.
R.N.: Registered NurseâMay have a college degree, but this is not necessary for some nursing programs.
A.P.R.N.: Registered nurses with additional education. Many have a masterâs degree. The group includes: certified nurse practitioner, certified nurse mid-wife, and certified nurse anesthetist.
L.P.N. or L.V.N.: Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse. They must have a high school education, plus a twelve to fourteen month course on basic nursing care. A licensing exam must be passed.
C.N.A.: Certified Nursing Assistant. These individuals receive training to provide non-medical care: bathing, dressing, and helping with bathroom needs.
O.D.: OptometristâCan prescribe glasses, but not do surgery. The individual must have graduated from an accredited school of optometry.
O.T.: OpticianâMay have no training or just a few weeks in an eye doctorâs office.
D.D.S.: DentistâThere are different types of dentists. Some have special training in diseases of the gum (peridontist) and others in straightening teeth (orthodontist).
M.F.C.C.: Marriage and Family TherapistâThese individuals have postgraduate training in counseling and can work in clinics or have their own private practice.
M.F.T.: Marriage and Family TherapistâThese are new initials for an M.F.C.C.
L.C.S.W.: Licensed Clinical Social WorkerâThese professionals have additional training beyond their degree in social work. They are licensed to see patients without the supervision of a physician.
M.S.W.: Medical Social WorkerâThese are individuals who have graduated from an accredited school of social work. They find solutions for complex family and social problems and are experts at finding community resources for patients. They are attached to clinics or hospitals.
F.A.C.S.: Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. This means a surgeon has completed a prescribed course of training and passed specific board examinations.
F.A.A.P.: Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
F.A.S.A.: Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
F.A.C.O.: Fellow of the American College of Otolaryngology.
F.A.C.O.S.: Fellow of the American College of Orthopedic Surgeons.
