Chapter Twelve

“Unca Spencer!”

Spencer turned just in time to catch the little girl that torpedoed into his arms. A wet kiss landed on his cheek when he lifted her to rest against his chest. His heart flip flopped at the honorary title.

“Hey, munchkin, you were the bestest cheerleader on the field.”

She giggled then held her arms out to Brock. Her uncle took her easily and got a matching smack on the cheek. Big eyes leveled on him.

“Unca Spencer, you didn’t kiss Unca Brock when you gots here. I was watching.” She frowned. “You can’t be his boyfriend if you don’t kiss him, that’s what boyfriends do.”

The logic of a four-year-old confounded him. She didn’t understand the animosity and prejudice of the world. Heads turned in their direction. While he was comfortable with his sexuality, he didn’t want these children subjected to ridicule and viciousness and this certainly wasn’t the place to try and explain hatred. He looked at Brock hoping for enlightenment.

“Sweetheart, we’ve talked about this remember. Not everyone’s comfortable with boyfriends. I’ll get a kiss and hug later when we’re alone.”

Spencer watched the easy way Brock conversed with his niece before she wiggled to get down. After a quick snack and another round of hugs, she dashed off to play with her friends.

“She’s amazing.” Spencer said, watching her go.

Brock and Denise both smiled.

“I’ve always been honest with her and Corey; didn’t want bullies having any ammunition to hurt them.” Denise gave her brother a one armed hug. “The children adore Brock. He’s been there for them when their dad hasn’t. He’ll always be their champion so watch yourself.”

The mock threat carried a clear warning from her as well. Spencer acknowledged it with a nod.

The game passed quickly. Corey tackled the ball carrier several times which they cheered vigorously. Spencer and Brock exchanged amused glances at Denise’s intensity over her child getting blindsided. The muttered curses proved colorful and creative.

At halftime, Spencer rose.

“I think I’ll have a chili dog and coke from the concession stand. You want anything?” He couldn’t hide the pleasure when Brock stood up next to him.

“I’ll go with you.”

At the base of the stairs, Spencer waited for Brock to reach his side. “Think the masses will go wild if I hold your hand while we walk?”

In response, Brock slid his palm against Spencer’s and twined their fingers together.

“Let them. It’s their problem, not ours.” Brock shrugged and swung their clasped hands. “So how long will you be gone? I thought the playoffs started on Monday.”

Spencer hated withholding details from Brock, but until he’d met with the Rangers’ management himself, he didn’t want to get overly excited about the possibilities.

“They do, and I expect to see you in the stands when we come back to McCoy.” Blood heated his face. What right did he have to demand Brocks’ presence? They hadn’t even established they were a couple; they’d only shared a few dates. Rushing on, he tried to cover the gaffe. “I’ll be back Sunday night. I’ll call you when I get in if that’s okay.
