Chapter 31

Spring Hill, Florida

Sunday, July 14, 8:30AM

“So Susie and Liza have two new girls?” Jason asked. Alicia smiled.

“More like one and a half,” she said. “Those girls are so skinny. But we’re working with them, and both are solid.”

“So it was a good trip for the girls,” Jason said.

“I’ll say, they got a chance to kill scumbags,” Alicia said. “And Cici is thrilled with the windows they found. She says they can build the second greenhouse now.”

“Aren’t you two forgetting about Ava Rayne and Mary Garrett?” Jenna asked. “They helped cook that breakfast you just ate.” Jason threw up his hands.

“Sorry, Babe,” he said. “I like both of them, too.”

“Well, you better,” Jenna replied. “I’m putting them at Jerry’s house next door.” Jason hugged his wife, then motioned for Alicia to follow him toward the firepit. He sat on the edge, and Alicia joined him.

“What’s up,” she asked.

“I want to take a group north,” Jason said. “To get a look at Tallahassee and check out Ralston’s compound in Jacksonville.”

“That’s great, count me in,” Alicia said. “Why the secrecy?”

“I don’t want to upset Jenna,” he said. “She hates these missions.”

“But this one is just to look around?” she asked. “We’re not going up there to kill that asshole, right?” Jason smiled.

“Well, if we saw him out walking his dog,” he said. “I’d probably take the shot.”

“From what I know,” Alicia said. “Ralston would be more likely to have some poor girl on that leash, Jason.”

“Okay, I’d like to leave on Thursday,’ Jason said. “Start thinking about who to take.”

“I’ve been thinking,” Susie said.

“Uh, oh,” Tory Vargaz replied. “Susie is thinking again.”

At the school, eight girls shared each former classroom. They used either tables, or several desks, as their beds, padded with blankets and sleeping bags. In the old world, the girls would have thought this sucked; now they were happy with it.

“Don’t be a smart ass, Tory,” Susie said, but she was grinning. Tory was two years older than Susie, but the two had become close friends.

“So what are you thinking about,” Liza asked. She and Lily walked closer.

“Well, we have to leave most of the Girls here,” Susie said. “To work on the greenhouse. But I keep thinking about what Clara said, about those hunters.”

“I know,” Liza said. “Guys who kidnap little kids. It sucks.”

“So I was thinking,” Susie said, glancing at Tory daring her to comment. “That we could take a crew down to that shitbag apartment complex and clear those assholes out.” Liza looked excited at the idea.

“It would be good practice,” she said. “All that breaching and clearing.”

“Yeah, and planning and logistics, too,” Susie said. “Covering all the exits and watching for squirters.”

“Okay! I’m in,” Lily said. “When and who’s going?”

“Today, I think,” Susie said. “Why not? We should take the crew from last week and maybe five or six more. And we should get Clara and the new girls too, since they know the area.”

“You think they’ll want to go back down there?” Tory asked.

“Shit, Clara is game for anything,” Liza said.
