Theda

Some people say confessions are good, but I wasn't so sure about that. After everyone had a chance to calm down, we moved into the living room to talk about the club more. Steve had no recollection of that many days passing. He knew people brought him food, and he remembered a few different vampires, but each time his words went back to Francine. The mystery vampire bothered me, especially since there had been no Francine claiming him when we'd taken him from the club. Of course, since the boss knew who and what I was, he might have made sure to keep her hidden. For good reason, too. It was clear Steve was in thrall, wrapped around the vampire's fangs. He would need a good, long detox, but all he wanted was to go home. Of course, if Francine suddenly died, that would cure Steve quickly.

"Until this vampire is out of your system, we can't leave you alone," I said for the tenth time.

"I'll take some time off and I promise, I'll just stay home," Steve urged.

"It doesn't work like that."

"Fine, I'll stay today, but then I go home."

I shook my head. "Unless you want me to go kill Francine, which would definitely solve the problem, a day won't be enough."

He stood up at my words, anger flashing in his eyes. "Stay away from Francine."

"I can't do this," I said, standing up. "We have bigger problems right now Steve!"

"Then stop worrying about me," he replied, crossing his arms.

My phone rang and I picked it up without looking. "What?" I snapped.

"Well, hello to you too," William replied.

"Do you have a cure for vampire thrall?" I asked.

"Some human caught the vampire bug and can't get enough? I do have a potion. Is this something you're thinking of selling in your shop?"

"You have something like that?" I asked, suddenly curious. "I just asked that on a whim."

"Well, it won't work on long term victims, but it seems to work well with the newbies." I heard him banging cupboards around through the phone. "You're in luck. I have three bottles, and I'll bring you the instructions to make more. I'm also done with your book. I was actually calling to return it, and see if you're available this evening."

My book. I'd forgotten I'd loaned it to him. That alone showed how distracted I'd been. "What's going on this evening?"

"I thought maybe we could have dinner."

I moved into the kitchen and clutched the phone to my ear. "A date?" I whispered. "Are you asking me out?"

"Well, just because we did things out of order doesn't mean I don't still want to date you properly. If you want to, that is."

"William, I can't right now."

"Steve?" he mused.

I sighed, cradling the phone against my cheek. "It's complicated."

"It always is. Are you at the shop or home?"

"Home."

"See you in ten."

He hung up and I cursed, calling him back. It rang several times before going to voice mail. Damn him. I turned around and headed back to the living room.
