Shelter
The ability to create emergency shelter for yourself and to stay safe from the elements is often an overlooked part of a bug out bag. Sure, you've got food and supplies, extra batteries and accessories to charge your phone, a flashlight, first aid gear and more, but what about shelter? If worse comes to worst, and you're stuck roughing it for a while without a place to sleep, you'll sure be glad you took emergency shelter into consideration.
Shelter Is Absolutely Necessary In An Emergency Situation
Shelter is one of the basic human needs. We're going to be taking a look at some options that you've got in terms of adding quick, easy and lightweight shelter into your bug out bag. If you're thinking that adding a tent and a sleeping bag will create too much bulk for an effective bug out bag, you're right - but don't worry because there are better options and we'll be taking a look at in just a moment's time.
Make Sure You Have The Following Emergency Shelter Items..
Here's a list of shelter-related items you should consider for your bug out bag. We're going to assume that you've already got all the basics covered and are all set when it comes to food and starting fires, and focus entirely on shelter and protection from nature.
A Lightweight Tarp
A tarp takes up a lot less space than a tent, and provides alright protection from the elements. If it rains, and you find yourself without a tarp, well - let's just say you'll wish that you had one.
Space Blanket / Thermal Blankets
Space blankets were first developed by NASA in the 1960's. In a survival setting, space blankets are amazing in terms of helping you stay warm. They're engineered to reflect body heat and to keep you warm, rather than letting the heat escape. They're also very, very thin and take up only about as much space as a medium-sized wallet, so it's a really good idea to keep one or two on hand.
A GI Poncho
A good GI Poncho can take the place of a tarp, as it's designed to be very versatile and can be used to create shelter with in many different situations. The poncho can also protect your bag while you're on the move, and you can wear it - so it doesn't take up any extra space in your bug out bag.
A Headnet
If you're sleeping in a shelter you've made with tarp and rope, or under the stars, chances are you won't have very good protection from insects. Headnets are very inexpensive as well as very compact and lightweight, and they can mean the difference between getting a good night's sleep or not. For those reasons, they've made out list of emergency shelter items to consider for your bug out bag.
Backpacker's Tent
A Backpacker's Tent is a small tent that's only big enough to sleep one person, the advantage being that it's smaller than a typical tent. Whether or not this is a practical choice for your unique situation is up to you to decide, but it's definitely a viable option.
