Some bad leaders cannot properly seize teachable moments because they have not come up to standard or adhered to policy as they ought. As a result, they have no credibility to teach others what they do not know or what they do not do themselves. When they try, they lose even more credibility.

Steve Carrel, who played Michael Scott, the main character on the TV program The Office, was particularly inept concerning both planned and spontaneous teaching moments, and his behaviors became the focus of criticism from his fellow-workers and much of the story line for the show. He attempted to create teaching moments but never got it right. Don’t be like Michael Scott.
