Iâm unsurprised and resigned to find Temple outside my home.
Well, if you can call it a home.
I live in, and under, a brothel. Agathaâs Folly sits nestled at the edge of the canning district, imaginatively called âThe Cansâ by locals. It suits me just fine. The smell of the canneries washes over me like a familiar blanket, simultaneously comforting and gag inducing. Most of Agathaâs customers are dock workers, blue collar types that donât ask questions and donât give a shit about the strange man in the greatcoat that appears and disappears at random times for weeks on end. Agatha runs the brothel like a military operation; girls and bodyguards and food and drink come and go with admirable efficiency, and the place is always warm and inviting.
And packed with enough delicious herbs and perfumes to cover the smell of fish the moment you walk through the door. Thank Eros.
A door thatâs currently blocked by Inspector Temple. He stands a head shorter than me, a plain man in plain clothes. Unassuming, which is absolute deception. He swings his black cane, an accoutrement he never leaves home without, as he speaks to someone inside the brothel. Efficient and intelligent, heâs like every beat copâs soul in history was harvested and cast into a golem. The kind of man that puts you at ease before hanging you, who befriends you before sending you down the river to the prison island of Sayle. The type who seems so blended in with the world that itâs almost easy to forget that heâs one of the most dangerous men in the city.
Not hard to remember today, though. I snap Jade shut without a word as I size up the twin golems Temple has with him. Roughly ten feet tall, theyâre mammoth, unthinking soldiers that live to follow his command. Gray stone is marked only by tiny eyes and mouths, unnecessary yet intimidating details all the same.
I bite my lip as I fight back familiar anger; it may be highly illegal for me to practice golemancy like I do, but apparently itâs fine for the government. I knew that, already, but it still pisses me off. Temple and his Inquisition use monster souls as soldiers, as laborers, even as whores so simple they donât understand the word ânoâ. I even suspect they have a few golem souls stashed away, though I canât prove it.
Why else would they have executed Rooker? Did he have a golem soul? Or was he trying to create something else?
Someone else stands at attention at Templeâs side, almost forgotten under the shadows thrown by the golems.
Sasha.
Fuck.
Templeâs chief enforcer. Terrifying, gorgeous, and one of the only people more dangerous than he is. She watches me, the only person on Agathaâs porch quick enough to notice me lurking in the shadows.
Well, so much for sneaking around the back. Ruby lips purse as she flips her long blond braid behind her shoulder. Her black armorâs cut close, some style from the far west exotic and rare enough that sheâs the only person Iâve ever seen who wears it.
