“Oh, you just have the bear necessities,” joked James.

“That is not funny, James!” said Goldilocks. “It’s not nice to make fun of those who don’t have a lot of money.”

“I’m very sorry, BB. Are we still friends?” asked James.

“Think nothing of it, James. It was actually kind of funny,” said Baby Bear.

“My mom is having a garage sale, and my bicycle is too small for me. I think I can get fifty dollars for it,” said Goldilocks.

James said, “I have one too small for me, too. Maybe I could get fifty dollars for my bicycle. Could I bring it over to your sale?”

“Sure thing, James. Now we have just nine hundred dollars to go,” said Goldilocks. “That still seems like a lot of money left to find.”

“I have saved up twenty-six dollars in my piggy bank,” said James. “I could part with that.”

“And I have twenty-four dollars saved. I could contribute that, too,” said Goldilocks. “We still have eight hundred and fifty dollars to go. How can we get that much money?”

Baby Bear had been thinking of hot chocolate, but suddenly he had an idea. “It is getting toward Christmas, and many parents take their children to the Nearwoods Mall to have their pictures taken with Santa Claus. I see humans looking at me, thinking I am cute. How about charging two dollars each for them to take a picture of their kids with me? They would have to use their own cameras, but almost all of them have one along.”

“Brilliant!” cried both James and Goldilocks.

James said, “My father has connections at the Nearwoods Mall. I’m sure he can get us a one-day permit.”

Goldilocks volunteered, “I will make a poster that says, ‘Merry Christmas from Teddy Bears Everywhere.’ The poster can be in their photos, too.”

It was all arranged. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, instead of holding a regular club meeting, the three of them rode with James’s father to the Nearwoods Mall, with James carrying the permit and Goldilocks carrying the poster.

“Have you ever seen so many people?” asks James. “We just might have a very good day.”

And they had a terrific day. There were fifty people at a time lined up for much of the morning and afternoon, and they took picture after picture of their children with the cute bear wearing a red stocking cap. The parents were very happy to contribute two dollars. James kept track of the time it took for the pictures, and if anyone took more than one minute, he politely suggested they move along. Goldilocks collected the money. After seven hours, they were exhausted, but Goldilocks counted out exactly $850.

“We did it, we did it!” they shouted as James’s father drove them home.

The garage sale went as expected, and they gave Goldilocks’s father exactly $1,000 to get the laser gun teleported to his house.

“We can be proud of getting the money. But BB should be proudest of all. It was his idea that earned most of the money,” said James.

“What are friends for?” said Baby Bear.
