The look on Hermes' face when he'd tried to take flight and remembered his powers had been given away would haunt her forever. Guilt sat like spoiled milk in her gut. He was going to resent her. Maybe not now, maybe not vocallyâ¦but he would.
"Are you even listening?"
Hybris blinked and glanced back at Myrine. "Yes."
"She wasn't, but it's all right," Bremusa added, tying her blonde hair back into a ponytail. "The plan is self-explanatory."
Hybris had to keep her focus. She could worry about Hermes and his feelings later. Right now though, everyone was in danger. "You two are going to aim for the wings and I'm going to do what to its tail?"
"I knew she wasn't listening," Myrine grumbled and unsheathed two daggers she'd had hidden under her dress.
Bremusa nodded as if Hybris' lack of attention was a typical occurrence. "If we fail, grab its tail and try to flash him far away from here. You do still retain that power, right?"
"Uh, yeah." Flying was much faster, but she doubted even with the speed the caduceus provided that she'd be able to transport a dragon that way. Flashing would still be strenuous. Perhaps impossible. "Where exactly would I take him that he didn't pose a danger?"
"The ends of the Earth would be nice." Myrine waited for Bremusa to take a battle stance with her sword, and then the two ran from the cover of the trees into the chaos.
"I really hope this works." Hybris floated upward to the top of the trees, staying out of sight of the dragon as she watched the tableau below. Satyrs ran left and right, dodging flames. Pan's house somehow hadn't gotten trampledâ¦but there was a fire precariously close to it. She made a mental note to bring Lily back first so she could use her powers to summon a heavy rain.
"Is this the best you can do? Maybe you should have waited another year. You couldn't hit a barn if it was the only building in a field and you were aiming right for it."
Oh, for fuck's sake, Hermes. She cringed. What in the name of Hades was he doing?
Bremusa and Myrine leapt onto the creature's back and began slicing and stabbing the wings before it realized what was happening. Once it did, it yowled, but Hermes didn't relent.
"I didn't really know your mother, but your father was an asshole. If I could blow up his temple all over again, I would. Preferably with him still inside of it."
The dragon roared, though because of the insults or the pain inflicted by the two vrykolakas this time, Hybris wasn't sure. Movement on the outskirts of the field drew her eye, and she squinted against the dark. Had one of the satyrs abandoned the fight?
She didn't get a chance to investigate. Destroyer took flight, or tried to, stumbling back to the ground. Bremusa went flying. Myrine, clung to her daggers embedded in the left wing. She grimaced, but she had latched on like a tick. Satyrs rushed forward, swords raised, and Destroyer spewed more fire, swinging his head toward the house.
