Chapter Seventeen

Katie

My jaw locks. “That’s not true.”

The woman stares at me with wide, innocent eyes. “Why, it is.”

“No,” I say, my hands clenching into fists. “I loved them.”

“But then you began to love another, and they wouldn’t let you go.”

“That’s a lie!” I find myself shouting.

She draws herself back. “I hadn’t meant to upset you, my queen, only to warn you.”

“Warn me of what exactly?” I ask, each word holding a bite.

“To warn you that if they believe you can’t love them again, you may be in danger.”

I stare at her, my heart racing. This strange woman is a liar. I might not know much anymore, but I know that I loved Benjamin, Jacob, and Asher, and that they could never hurt me. The only question is who this woman is and why she would spew such lies.

“Who are you?” I ask.

She stands a little taller. “Galinda, a fae, and your servant.”

“Well,” I choose my words with care, “I don’t believe a word you say.”

She gives a little bow. “Whatever you say, my queen.”

When she turns to go, I find myself saying, “Wait.”

The woman freezes.

“You want me to believe I gave up being a goddess, all my powers, and my memories…to escape the men I loved. I’m sorry if I find that hard to believe.”

She looks back at me slowly. “You must understand that your magic isn’t always a good thing. When you bespelled the three warriors to love you, you didn’t understand how difficult it would be to have them love you unconditionally. To need you, even when you no longer needed them. That kind of magic, it can be just as much of a blessing as it is a curse.”

“Love, a curse?” I say, almost laughing the words.

Her expression darkens. “Being forced to love someone is a curse, make no mistake of that.”

“And you’re saying I bespelled them? I made them love me?” The questions feel slimy as they leave my lips.

“If you don’t believe me, go to the Cave of Truths. It’s not far from here, just a few miles down the beach in that direction. It’s a cave hidden to the human eye by magic, but one you’ll easily recognize. There, you can ask any question and know the truth.” Her gaze gentles. “I only hope you’ll like what you hear.”

I open my mouth to ask another question, but the woman is gone.

An instant later, Jacob rounds the corner of the house. “It’s safe.”

I nod, realizing that I’m trembling.

He moves to stand before me. “Are you okay?”

“Yes,” I say, but I really mean that I will be.

If there is a cave that can tell me the truth, I can learn whether or not my love with these men is real. For some reason, the events surrounding us getting together are hazy in my mind. If I truly used my magic to make them fall for me, then nothing they feel for me is real.

And I’m considering giving up everything for men who are being forced to love me.
