CHAPTER XII

The place they were to spend the night in turned out to be a large and old stonework windmill that had endured surprisingly well.

They followed the path up to it and Lucas let Syl down, then began the process of clearing the area for hostiles. He had been reluctant to stop now, as they had at least a few hours of daylight left, but Talia and Clover both agreed that the next location suitable for bunking down for the night was farther than they could reach before nightfall.

He’d almost pushed the issue, because he was becoming increasingly uneasy about being away from Blackstone Forest, but Syl was clearly still weak, and while he had a lot of endurance, he had been carrying a goblin girl for about half the day so far.

Lucas checked the area, inside and out, and found nothing dangerous.

They all came into the windmill and began setting up their encampment for the night. As he set up their bedding and Talia and Clover began gathering and organizing firewood, he started to remember the pleasure of setting up camp early.

It meant you could take your time and bask in the glow of a slowly fading day. There was a simple yet powerful pleasure to building a little nest for the night with a woman he knew he was going to sleep with. And that pleasure only magnified if there were more women around, although he still wasn’t completely sure if Clover wanted him, and the subject hadn’t even been broached with Syl.

Although she’d been very, very clingy as he’d carried her. It was subtle, but all day she had been acting less like a woman being carried by a man she barely knew and more like a woman being carried by her lover.

After some initial worry, she’d let her guard down almost wholly towards him.

Once they’d gotten everything set up, he offered to go hunt for dinner.

“Let me come with you,” Clover said.

“Okay. Talia, Syl, you good to stay here?” he asked.

“I think I need a nap, so yes,” Syl replied, yawning.

“Go on, we’ll be fine here, husband,” Talia replied with a small but loving grin.

He returned it, for a moment caught and even captivated by her exotic violet eyes and the intensity of her gaze.

“Uh...okay, we’ll be back soon,” he replied.

“Bring me some rabbit,” she said.

“Yes, wife.”

She laughed softly and actually blushed, then turned away to finish sorting through their supplies. He grabbed his crossbow and left the windmill with Clover. They broke west, into another stretch of dense woodland.

For the first while, they didn’t talk, just hunted, looking around for signs of wildlife. After a bit, though Lucas felt the questions rising in him and decided now was as good a time as any.

“Clover, I was wondering if you had any idea how long you might be sticking around before going back out into the wilderness?”

“Traditionally I come home in the fall and stay through the winter, then head out again in the spring,” she replied.
