The car ride to Pandora's Box was a silent one, the tension from before lingering like a heavy fog. When we arrived, Liam handed me a ticket, his expression unreadable. Part of me considered not going at all, just to spite him, to prove some point that even I wasn't sure of. But the risk of what that might provoke held me back, a reluctant acknowledgment of the precarious balance we were trying to maintain. I was mad at myself for letting my desires get the better of me earlier, for allowing a moment of weakness to cloud my judgment. I silently vowed that it wouldn't happen again, that I would keep my guard up, no matter how disarming Liam could be.

As I settled into my seat, I took in the surroundings of Pandora's Box, the infamous campus rink that I had heard so much about but never visited. The air was filled with the sound of excited chatter, the buzz of anticipation palpable among the crowd. The rink itself was an expanse of gleaming ice, surrounded by rows of seats filled with an eclectic mix of people—students from the university, families with young children, and die-hard hockey fans clad in their team's colors. The smell of popcorn and hotdogs wafted through the air, mingling with the colder, sharper scent of the ice.

I felt out of place, unsure of what to expect from the game or how I was supposed to act. My knowledge of hockey was limited at best, and the enthusiasm of the crowd was both infectious and intimidating. I couldn't shake the feeling of being an outsider, of being here under circumstances that were anything but normal. The weight of the ticket in my hand was a reminder of the strange turn my life had taken, of the fact that I was here as Liam's wife, a role I was still struggling to comprehend.

Once the players took to the ice, the crowd erupted into cheers, the energy in the rink reaching a fever pitch. I watched, feeling a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, as they began to warmup. The speed and grace with which the players moved were mesmerizing, a dance of agility and strength that I hadn't expected.

Yet, beneath the surface of my newfound curiosity, there was an undercurrent of unease. I was here because of Liam, because of a marriage that I hadn't chosen. The joy of the game was tinged with the complexity of my emotions towards him—anger, confusion, and, despite my best efforts to deny it, a flicker of something that felt dangerously like attraction. As I watched the players glide across the ice, I couldn't help but wonder what the future held for us, what other unexpected turns lay ahead in this unexpected journey we had embarked on together.

It wasn’t long before the game began. Unfortunately, and despite my best efforts, my attention was drawn to Liam. They called him The Scarecrow, a nickname that seemed odd until I saw him in action.
