South Atlantic and Eastern Gulf Coastal States

The South Atlantic and eastern Gulf coastal region consists of a large portion of the commercial southern pine area, as well as quality hardwoods from inland areas.

A 12.3-million-acre decline in farmer-owned CFL could lead to reductions in available timber volumes. Miscellaneous private ownership, although showing a large increase (7.5 million acres) for the region, declined by 0.9 million acres in Florida. The overall net change for the region is a loss of 3.6 million acres of CFL, but miscellaneous private owners now control 40 percent of the CFL. This indicates that a large portion of CFL is controlled by owners whose motives are uncertain, although some may be farmers who have had to turn to other occupations. The forest industry showed a modest gain of 1.0 million acres (USDA, Forest Service, 1980).
