Chapter 13

We left Exchange Flags in silence. Bertie and Bella had taken wing and were nowhere to be seen. I was disappointed; I wanted to see them again. I wanted to touch their copper wings to see what they felt like. I searched the skies, but there was no sign of them. It was probably a good thing; touching the Liver Birds might be a bit intrusive – and their beaks looked deadly.

Still not looking at me, Stone pulled out his phone. He tapped in a number and spoke. ‘Do you have time to meet with me? I need a favour.’

The other person must have answered in the affirmative. Stone rang off and turned to me. ‘We’re meeting Inspector Ven at Moose Café.’

‘The inspector that’s done some quick talking to prevent a clan war?’

‘That’s the one.’ He paused. ‘Do we need to talk about the beheading?’

I blinked. ‘Not really. I mean, I should say thank you, shouldn’t I? Thanks for saving me.’

‘You just keep surprising me, Jinx.’

‘I’m the gift that keeps on giving,’ I assured him.

He nodded. ‘You certainly are.’

‘Um … the oath?’

‘Like I said before, truth seekers used to be enslaved. You don’t want people knowing what you can do. That was pre-the Connection, but it’s better to keep your skill set quiet.’

I nodded, still uneasy even though I knew he was protecting me.

It only took five minutes to walk to Moose Café. ‘I love their pancakes,’ I said enthusiastically. ‘Oh, and their milkshakes.’

‘You had a full cooked breakfast about an hour ago,’ Stone pointed out.

‘So? What’s your point?’

He shook his head. I told Gato to wait for us outside the café. Inside it was busy: brunch is their big thing. It’s an America-Canadian food joint all about good things like pancakes, bagels and waffles.

Stone led us up to the mezzanine floor. The sole occupant was African-Caribbean, around thirty-five and solidly built. He had three triangles. He looked up as we walked in and smiled widely at Stone. ‘Zach! Good to see you, man.’ He stood and shook Stone’s hand.

‘Ajay!’ Stone greeted him with equal enthusiasm, pulling him in for a man hug instead of accepting his hand. Ajay? That was who Emory had mentioned.

‘This is Jinx.’ Stone stepped back.

‘My honour to meet you,’ I said, touching my right hand to my heart and giving a slight bow like Roscoe had shown me yesterday.

‘The honour is mine,’ Ajay said warmly, bowing back. ‘My honour to meet you. Please, join me.’

‘We’ve not long eaten,’ Stone excused himself.

I snorted. ‘Speak for yourself. I’m one hundred percent having an Oreo milkshake. And maybe Moose apple and home-made salted caramel pancakes. Definitely the pancakes.’

Stone looked bemused. ‘You know the menu off by heart?’

‘I’ve had a lot of hangovers in this place,’ I said fondly.

Ajay grinned. ‘I’m a fan of the Mighty Moose.’ He gestured to a waitress who was standing by and put in our orders. Then he said, ‘So, what’s up? You need a favour?’

‘I need an audience with Lord Cathill. Today.’

Ajay blinked.
