As far as distractions went, Walker’s extended family knew how to deliver.

Luke and Kelli had teamed up with Caleb’s girls, and the four of them lobbed snowballs in random directions, not really caring what they hit. The erratic missiles made it tough to get across the yard unscathed.

Walker ducked behind a tree, nearly stepping on Tucker and Ginny in the process. His sister and her fiancé were busy making snowball after snowball, saving them in a huge pile.

“Don’t mind if I do,” Walker said, nabbing one off the top of the stack.

“Hey, those are for the final battle,” Ginny complained, but she blew him a kiss. “Ivy’s waving at you from the porch. Make a break for it—we’ll cover you.”

Walker peeked from behind the tree, checking how wildly the battle raged between him and his target. “Going…now!”

He rushed into the yard, dodging to the right then rolling. When he popped up, a startled shout exploded in his face. His younger brother stood before him, shocked at Walker’s sudden appearance. Dustin teetered, windmilling his arms as he fought for balance.

Too tempting. Walker shifted just enough to nudge his baby brother backward.

“No fair,” Dustin cried, a grunt following as snow squeaked under him.

Sudden satisfaction struck. After a quick glance to either side to make sure he wasn’t about to be ambushed, Walker closed the distance to where Ivy waited for him on the back porch.

He admired the pretty colour in her cheeks then frowned when he realized she’d pulled on her coat but still wore house slippers and no gloves or toque. “You need to bundle—”

“They’re coming. Now. Like, right now.”

Walker paused, glancing around the yard at all the family. He didn’t see anyone missing—

Oh. Oh, hell.

He caught Ivy’s fingers. “The girls? Now?”

She laughed. “You look like I feel. Oh, Walker. They’re on their way. They’ll be here in under an hour.”

He snatched her up and spun her in a circle before kissing her thoroughly. When he finally got himself under control, the noise of the yard had faded to a dull roar.

Caleb met his gaze. “News?”

Walker’s heart pounded so hard, he vibrated with it. “They’re on the way.”

A whoop went up, echoed by a dozen others.

Then Tansy whistled, loud and sharp, catching the entire group’s attention as she jumped up on the snow-covered picnic table. “Okay, everybody out of the pool. Follow the plan. We’ll all wait patiently for our turn to meet the new sweeties.”

Arms swinging as if she were an air traffic controller, Tansy got the mess of them moving. Laughter continued to ring, and all his siblings paused briefly on their way out to pat Walker on the back. Yet like magic, only moments later, the yard was empty.

Bemused, Walker led Ivy back inside the warm house.

She shook her head as she pulled off her coat. “I can’t believe they all left like that. What plan was Tansy talking about?”

“I’m as lost as you,” Walker admitted.

Although, he was glad someone had made a plan. He and Ivy wanted
