Chapter 24

Earlier that Sunday morning, Emma stared at the steaming cup of coffee. Rosa had fixed it up how Emma liked it. Even adding a dash of cinnamon, the brown flakes of which still floated on the surface. The aroma smelled enticing, but she couldn’t bring herself to enjoy it. Fearing that if she enjoyed the coffee, it would give her another excuse to put off what she knew she had to do.

“Why are you so sad?” Nicolle asked.

The Goodens’ two little girls watched Emma like baby hawks at the breakfast table.

“Yeah, you look sad,” Naomi added.

“Girls, eat your breakfast.” Rosa joined them at the table with a bowl of cereal and some toast.

Ben was all suited up as he worked on a piece of bacon. “Call your grandmother yet?” he asked Emma.

“It’s five in the morning there,” Rosa said before taking another bite of her cereal.

“Is her grandma okay?” Nicolle asked.

“She’s fine,” Rosa said. “But Emma didn’t ask you to be nosin’ around in her business. But if you must know, Emma needs to call her grandmother because she’s worried about where she is.”

Nicolle looked shocked. “Emma didn’t tell her grandma she was visiting us?”

“You’re in trouble,” Naomi said.

“But Emma’s gonna do the right thing and call her.” Ben glanced over at his girls. “Because I’d expect nothing less from the two of you.”

“Okay, Daddy,” Nicolle said. “We’ll call you.”

“Yeah, don’t be trippin’ on us,” Naomi added.

Ben cocked his head. “Did you say…don’t be trippin’?”

Naomi laughed. “Yeah.”

“That’s it.” Ben got up and put his empty plates in the sink. “From now on, we only play jazz in this house.”

“Okay, right now, Daddy’s trippin’,” Rosa said with a grin.

The two girls laughed. Emma caught herself smiling.

“Fine, I’m punting the ball.” Ben made his way around the table as he picked up his soft briefcase. “I’ll go enjoy my jazz in the car. Where it can be appreciated.” He hesitated near Emma, expecting something.

“She gets up at six,” Emma said. “I’ll call her then. Promise.”

“Text me when you do.” Ben gave her a quick hug, then did the same for everyone else.

“Where you going?” Rosa asked him.

Ben hesitated. “Work.”

“Baby, it’s Sunday.”

Ben was confused, then thought about it. He rolled his eyes before he laughed at himself. “Daddy is trippin’.”

The two little girls laughed again.
