SEVENTEEN

Driving down Deerfoot Trail, Meagan’s phone started to ring. Thankfully it was Ben. She veered onto Memorial Drive and headed straight for his house. When she got there, he was out front playing with Soda.

As she opened the door on the truck, Ben threw a soggy tennis ball through the crack so Soda would leap into the truck.

“Ahhh! Yuck!” A ball bounced off her hand and across the seats. Soda leapt over her, pushing off the steering wheel with her hind paws as she headed for the floor on the passenger side.

Ben came over laughing at the sight. “Haven’t you learned how to block yet?”

Meagan was out of the truck now. The dog found the ball and was standing on the seat, wagging her tail and grinding her teeth into the sloppy ball. Ben grabbed it from her and in the same movement threw it across the yard. Soda leapt from the cab after the green orb. Meagan took the opportunity to wipe her dog-slobbered hand on Ben’s jacket.

“Yuck!” he said, as he tried to move away.

“Ha, we are even now!” she said laughing.

They walked to the front door and the dog faithfully followed them in, then placed the ball in a wicker basket full of mangled dog toys at the door.

Meagan stared at the dog. “Holy cow, how did you train her to do that?”

“I’m not just a pretty face you know. I can do other things.”

“No really, that’s cool. How did you train her?”

“Actually, I didn’t do anything. She started doing it one day and I didn’t stop her. But don’t tell anyone else. It makes me look brilliant.”

They walked into the kitchen and he grabbed two coffee mugs and then grabbed a third.

“I called Joseph and said you were coming over. He only lives three blocks from here, so he said he would pop by.”

The doorbell rang triggering Soda to roar down the hall.

Ben went to the door and brought back Joseph.

Meagan rose to greet him. “Hi Joseph, want a coffee?”

“Yes, thanks. So, how you doin?” he said, smiling and studying her face.

“Well, I’m okay – I guess. I’m glad I’ve had a bit of time to sort it all out. I think by tomorrow morning I’ll be able to handle the group and Dianne. But I’m glad to see you guys. I’d like to hear what you think I should do. Maybe we can work out some scenarios.”

They all sat at the table and went over the different settings that could happen. As the sun sank in the window, they came up with a perfect setup they all agreed on.

While Joseph went out for a smoke, Meagan called a locksmith and organized a time for him to come and retool the locks on the house and garage.

Ben watched as she made the call then said, “You seem a lot stronger compared to yesterday. Did you run a marathon or have a spa treatment or sleep the day off or something?”

“Actually.” She beamed as she spoke. “Actually, about an hour after you left yesterday the doorbell rang.
