CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Rebecca woke up on a scratchy, stiff cot. The cold pack sent a shiver down her forehead and arm, leaving her with a tingling feeling of numbness. She looked at her arm with an IV needle in the crook of her elbow. The angry red lines had receded a little. “Where am I?” Her throat still felt raw.

“You’re in the infirmary. You collapsed in the parking lot,” a man in blue scrubs said. He checked something on the machine and smiled at her. “You had over a hundred and five degree fever. The attacks throughout the city delayed the ambulance we called. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of here.”

The room had no windows. In front of the door stood a steel gate, and an armed guard stood just inside. He stood motionless, his gaze fixed straight ahead.

“What is this?”

“It’s antibiotics to fight the infection and to help bring your temperature down. It’s temporary until the ambulance can get you the proper care.” He rolled his wheeled chair across the room to an ancient computer. He typed some notes and frowned. “Darn thing, so slow.”

“You know who could help me right now?” Rebecca leaned her head back and stared at the ceiling. The ceiling tiles had dark wet spots in contrast to the white. Weakness spread through her as she tried to figure out a way to see Chloe.

“Who?” the doctor asked.

“Chloe. She’s cured me of worse.”

The doctor rubbed his face. “The new prisoner? She’s a doctor?”

“Yeah, with her power, she can cure any wound.”

“Too bad she’s a prisoner.” The doctor turned back to his computer.

“Maybe you could tell Ulysses how serious this is.”

“He doesn’t listen to me about prisoners. I’m mainly here for the guards, in case a prisoner injures them.” The doctor sighed as the computer continued to plod along.

Rebecca stared at the antibiotics dripping from the bag next to her. “Where are my brother and friend?”

“They’re waiting outside,” the doctor said.

“Can I see them?”

“Sure.” He nodded at the guard.

The guard glanced at Rebecca. His eyes remained hard as he unlocked the gate, pulled it open, and left.

A moment later, Alex entered. He flashed a smile and approached her, taking her hand in his. “You scared me there for a moment.”

“Sorry.” She scratched around the spot where they fed the needle into her skin. “I feel better.” She glanced at the doctor and lowered her voice. “What’s going on with Chloe?”

“Ulysses said she’s in solitary because of her profile of working with you. The other prisoners tried to hurt her.”

“Can you explain I need her?”

“I tried. Ulysses remained firm. She’s locked up.”

Rebecca looked at the unlocked gate. “We’ll need to get to her.”

“How?” Alex looked over his shoulder at the doctor. “This doesn’t seem like a place where we can just go walking around. Especially without your powers.”

When he made his point, she felt a heavy weight in her stomach. “What about Evan?”

“What about him?”

“He can get to her, right?”

“Maybe.” A sly smile crossed his lips. “What do you have in mind?”

“An idea.
