Dez was making breakfast the following day when Sully showed up. Dezâs wife, Eva, had already left for her shift with the Kimotan Rapids Police Department and their daughter, Kayleigh, was walking to school with a friend who lived nearby. It left Sully to play with their dog, Pax, while Dez finished putting together his meal.
âMaking an omelette,â Dez told Sully. âWant one?â
Sully glanced up from the floor where he was wrestling with Pax, a massive black, long-haired dog of mixed breed. Dez had never figured out what breeds, and he supposed it didnât matter.
Pax had come into their lives in a roundabout way, he and Sully basically having rescued each other a number of years back. While Pax lived with Dezâs family now, he remained just as much Sullyâs dog.
âSure,â Sully said. âWhat do you have for fillings?â
Dez ran through the options, eating his while getting Sullyâs ready. âDid you mention any of what weâre working on to Sarah?â
Sarah, Sullyâs fiancée. âNo, and she didnât ask. We have an agreementâdonât ask, donât tell. Not that I donât trust her, but she knows when I donât talk about cases, thereâs a reason.â
Since Sarah worked as a reporter at the cityâs largest newspaper, Dez figured the two of them had come up with a sensible way to keep their jobs from coming between them.
âI didnât mention much to Eva either,â Dez said. âOrdinarily, I tell her a lot, but given she works in the fraud section, I didnât want to put her in a bad spot. Lachlanâs investigation already had the potential for winding up on Evaâs unitâs table.â
âGood point,â Sully said. âDid Lachlan say anything more about how he wants to tackle this?â
As Dez chewed on a bite, he flipped the egg in the frying pan. âNope. Knowing him, he wonât bother sharing until weâre right outside whatever door heâs planning on knocking on.â
Dez and Sully had just enough time to scarf down breakfast and one cup of coffee each when Lachlan called.
âWas up half the night strategizing,â Lachlan said once Dez put him on speaker. âMeet me downtown in an hour. Iâll text you the address.â
âOld Downtown or new one?â Dez asked.
âNew one. Despite Barton Winchâs past involvement in the Old Downtown Business Improvement District, heâs long since moved on to greener pastures. Oh, and Dez? Doesnât matter about Sully, but I want you here in slacks and a button-down.â
Dez raised his brows though Lachlan wasnât there to see. âWhy?â
âIâll fill you in when you get here.â With that, Lachlan disconnected.
Dez glared at his phone before turning worried eyes on Sully. âWhat the hellâs he up to?â
Sully shrugged. âNo idea. Experience tells me Iâd rather not find out.â
