Chapter Ten
James stalked through the ERâs doors. Heâd texted Tess twice, but she hadnât responded to him, and that shit was making him nervous. He glanced down at his phone. Yes, he got that she could have been called away for a patient, but so much time had passed since heâd first tried to reach her. Too much time. With the break-in and that damn near hit by the mystery truck, he was on edge. Heâd stay that way, until he could make certain everything was okay. He knew her shift should have ended, and that was another reason why he was so twitchy.
Iâm not twitchy. Iâm worried.
The ER was filled with people, no big surprise there. Tess had said the place was always packed. He paused a moment inside, glancing around with narrowed eyes. Maybe Tess had needed to extend her shift. She couldâve gotten so busy that she had to stay late.
But tension was thick in his gut. He needed to see her. Once he made certain she was okay, heâd get the hell out of her way.
He caught sight of a familiar figure. Marilyn bustled down the hallway, wearing blue scrubs. James locked on her and closed in. âMarilyn!â
She turned. Her eyes widened. âOh, thank God!â
Waitâ¦thank God?
âSheâs okay.â Marilyn grabbed his arm and hauled him closer. âBut it scared the hell out of me, you know?â
His heart slammed into his ribs. âWhat scared the hell out of you?â
âTessâs attack. Damn, that woman has some serious bad luck happening right now. Two attacks so close together andââ
âStop.â Sheâd been trying to haul him toward a swinging door.
Marilyn frowned at him. âWhy? Donât you want to see Tess? Sheâs out of the exam area now and sheâs okay, a slight concussion, butââ
His entire body iced. âWhat the fuck are you talking about?â
A throat cleared behind him. âMarilyn, you have patients waiting. Iâll explain things to Dr. Barrettâsâ¦friend.â
He knew that prick voice. Devin Goddard.
Marilyn didnât move. Her eyes narrowed on James. âYou didnât get a call about her? But you were supposed to be notified. I thoughtâ¦â Her voice trailed away as she glanced back at Devin, then over at James.
His teeth clenched. âSomething happened to Tess?â
Marilyn gave a quick nod. âShe was attacked earlier. Someone knocked her out when she was cutting through the corridor under renovation, butââ
âBut, luckily, I found her,â Devin cut in. âI chased off the bastard in there, and I carried Tess to safety. Sheâs quite all right now.â
He didnât look at the guy, not yet. James pulled in a slow breath. Released it.
âYou were supposed to be notified,â Marilyn mumbled. âTess asked for you to be called.â
Yet he hadnât been. When Tess needed him, he hadnât been there.
Fucking hell.
âYou have patients waiting, Marilyn. Are you going to neglect them all night?â
Marilynâs gaze snapped toward Devin. She gave a little growl then stomped off.
James faced off with Devin. âWhere is she?â
âCome this way.â Devin headed to the right, not even looking back to see if James was following him.
