Chapter 12

“So, onward or back home?”

Home.

Kind of a loaded word for me lately, but I get it. To Esras, Scintillia is home. In a sense, I guess it’s mine too these days. I look over at him as we lay inside the tent where we spent the night in each other’s arms. “What do you think?”

He trails his fingers through my hair. “I think it’s a mission of observation. And, so far, everything outside the city seems fine.”

Laying on my back, I nod. “True.”

“And, if need be, you could always open a portal.”

“Also true.”

A moment passes. “As for me, I wouldn’t mind observing a little more.”

He says this while nuzzling my neck. “Mmm. By all means, keep observing. Let me know if you need any help.”

Esras laughs softly, his lips grazing the underside of my chin.

Which should be enough to stop me from thinking about what set us off on this trip to begin with. Unfortunately, my thoughts return to that distant plume of smoke as well as the feeling that came with it. That something bad is out there waiting. And while whatever, or whoever, it might be isn’t targeting the countryside, that could just mean that, so far, we simply haven’t been observed. The thought makes me shudder as, suddenly, I remember that dream I’ve kept having.

Esras whispers, “Everything okay?”

“Yes.” I hesitate. “Maybe. No, not exactly.”

His brow creases as he studies me. “What’s on your mind?”

I sit up, pushing the blanket aside. “I’m not sure.” I think for a moment. “I just… I feel like we’re running out of time.”

He touches my shoulder. “Until what?”

That’s just it, isn’t it? I have no idea. And what am I going to tell him, I had some sort of vague and crazy nightmare? If that was a vision of the future, it sure didn’t offer a whole lot in the way of details.

He keeps his concerned gaze on mine. “Does this have anything to do with what happened?”

If by that he means me suddenly becoming dead, then the answer is yes. But I have no idea how that ties into anything. How can it?

“Maybe.” Exasperated, I run my hands through my hair. “I keep thinking there’s a connection.”

He rubs my back, trying to ease the tension. “What can I do to help?”

As much as I want to go back to where we were just a few minutes ago, it’s too late for that now. And while I’d love nothing more than to keep moving slowly, I feel like it’s time to pick up the pace. “How about a compromise?”

He cocks his head. “I’m listening.”

“I think we should take a little jump.”

“How far?”

As much as I hate to say it, I still do. “About halfway to Ferlernon.”

I’m sure it’s not my imagination that Esras looks troubled. In his gut, I suspect he feels the same way I do. Even though it shouldn’t after all this time, that place ties in somehow. Or, at least, there’s a good chance it does. He thinks for another moment, and then nods resolutely.
