1 The UKGAP was developed through cooperation between geological and geoconservation organisations, groups and individuals across the UK and was formally launched in 2011.

2 The Scottish and English Geodiversity Forums have brought together organisations, groups and individuals in Scotland and England with a common interest in promoting geodiversity and geoconservation, and supporting the delivery of the UKGAP.

3 An unconformity occurs where directly overlying rocks (here the Cretaceous) are significantly younger than the underlying rocks (Carboniferous in this case). The difference in age between the Cretaceous and Carboniferous is approximately 200 million years. An unconformity is usually the result of an extended period of non-deposition or erosion.
