Chromosome Numbers: No More and No Less

Every species has a typical number of chromosomes revealed by its karyotype. For example, humans have 46 total chromosomes (humans are diploid, 2n, and n = 23). Dogs are also diploid and have 78 total chromosomes, while house cats have 2n = 38. Euploidy is when an organism has one or more complete sets of chromosomes. In a euploid organism, its total number of chromosomes is an exact multiple of its haploid number (n). When an organism has extra chromosomes or is missing chromosomes, so that the total number of chromosomes is not an exact multiple of its haploid number, the condition is referred to as aneuploidy. Aneuploidy is the most common type of chromosome abnormality.
