MY HEART pounded in my ears as too many thoughts raced through my head. Sophie had somehow used her Interpreter powers on me to help me focus. The energy she’d transferred into me felt like a current of electricity buzzing and crackling in my head.

I could see twenty different scenarios playing out and only a few had happy endings. As in—we didn’t get killed or captured.

“Take that side street up there!” I yelled at the driver.

He yanked the wheel hard to the left, sending the back end fishtailing. I braced one arm against the seat in front of me. Even so, I slid into Sophie, her lotus flower scent tickling my nose.

How did she smell so good in the middle of a crisis after a long day of research?

I shook off the errant thought. I didn’t have time to go gaga over a girl. Right now, I had to keep her safe. Keep all of us safe.

The car emerged from the side street that was more of a narrow alley, and we careened onto an almost empty street lined with warehouses. Good thing I’d made that attempt to memorize a map of Casablanca before we left. Thanks to Sophie’s power, it came back to me with perfect clarity.

Giant buildings lined the streets in an endless sea of steel siding, most dark and empty at this late hour. A few warehouses just looked abandoned.

For the first time since we left the repository, I relaxed a little. Okay, now I could make a plan that might get us out of here in one piece.

“Okay, Maroc. As soon as you see an opening where they’ve lost us even for a split second, pull into the nearest warehouse and kill the lights. We’ll close the door.”

“Hold on, I’ll pull in there.” The driver angled toward one of the nearby open doors. “Haven’t seen anyone on my tail since we turned. I think we lost them in the alley.”

Then, with a deft motion, Maroc yanked on the wheel, pulling the vehicle through the opening as quickly as possible.

Even though the move was executed to perfection, I bumped into Sophie again—this time sliding an arm around her back to brace her from ramming into the door.

Suddenly, Maroc turned the car off and killed the lights, exactly as I’d ordered.

“How long should we wait, boss man?” Stuart flashed me a cheeky grin from the passenger seat.

I cocked my head at him. “You know protocol. Thirty minutes at least.”

Everyone in the car groaned, but Maroc and Stuart jumped out to close the warehouse door.

“We’ll keep watch.” Stuart met my gaze as he shut his door quietly.

“Thirty minutes.” Maroc tapped his watch, exiting the vehicle too.

I nodded, synchronizing my watch.

As soon as the GA guards were gone, Bella curled into Patrick’s side, whimpering a little. “I just wanted to look at books and help Sophie out. This has all become such a nightmare.”

“It’s gonna be okay, Bels.” Patrick rubbed her back and murmured soothing words in her ear.

And this time, I didn’t want to punch him.
