Conner

“Alan is going to be so pissed off his plan didn’t work,” Conner said, not hating the idea of the Archangel being angry. “Is it bad that I can’t wait to tell him?”

“You’re horrible,” Laren said, not meaning those words at all. “I want to be the one that tells him.”

The husband and wife shared a weary chuckle brought on by fatigue from working through the night to see that the wounded were cared for, prisoners were secured, and everyone was back inside the safety of the fortress walls.

“The Dread Mindless are still out there waiting,” Laren mused out loud as she and her husband stood to the side of the courtyard and ate a meager breakfast of oatmeal and fruit. “If there was a time to take the fight to them, this would be it.”

Conner thought about the idea. His wife wasn’t wrong. They had just broken their single greatest threat. Not only that a young girl had been the one to bring about the fall. But the vast throngs of Dread Mindless still waited.

A whoosh and heavy wings thumped to the ground beside them. Conner didn’t even have to turn around to know who it was.

“Interesting that you keep showing up after the fighting is over,” Conner said to Alan as he turned and offered him his leftover oatmeal. “Breakfast?”

Alan stood there steaming in the cold morning light of dawn. His wings had been brought into his back, but it was clear wherever he flew from, he had done so quickly.

Alan eyed Conner as if he were going to snap back with a sarcastic remark. If it was possible, the Archangel looked as tired as Conner felt.

“Boys,” Laren said with a warning in her voice reminiscent of a school teacher to two energetic students.

Alan took a deep breath and recentered himself, accepting the bowl of oatmeal.

“Sure, I’m never going to turn down food,” Alan said with a wink.

“That might be the only thing we have in common,” Conner said, finding himself enjoying the moment. “The Dread army attacked our reinforcements coming in from New Olympia. We didn’t have much of a choice but to go to help. A girl named Cidney broke the Dread Commander of all things. The army scattered before we could lure out the Mindless Dread. I think that pretty much sums it up. Laren, did I miss anything?”

“It felt way too easy,” Laren added thoughtfully. “This can’t be it.”

“Because it was too easy,” Alan said with a sigh. “I’ve been from Canada to Europe, Australia and back in the time since I’ve seen you dispersing the cure for the Dread, making sure enough was made and everyone has it. Coordinating this event with all the help of the Nephilim and Guardians has been a logistical nightmare, but the worst is yet to come.”

“Wonderful,” Conner said with a fake smile and coat of sarcasm over his words. “What’s next?”

“You said you caught the Dread Commander?” Alan reaffirmed, looking to both Conner and Laren. “I think that would be a good place to start.
