‘Are you feeling all right, Ginny? You don’t look that happy.’

‘I was going to say the same thing to you, Lucy. You’re looking very pale.’

The two mothers had just dropped their offspring off at the nursery school and were standing outside in the winter sunlight, which emphasised their mutual paleness. Ginny Smee had dark rings under her eyes and Lucy Barton was very white and feeling nauseous.

‘Cup of tea?’

A quick nod of agreement led the two women across the road into Lilac Cottage and its warm kitchen, still messy after breakfast.

‘Derek and I lost another house this weekend. Bought right

from under us by someone from Hong Kong. It was perfect, Lucy. Just outside Piddlehinton.’

‘No turkeys or geese around?’

‘None at all.’ Ginny hated the birds up at Ash Farm, which had caused her grief ever since they had bought the Old Vicarage four years before.

‘It doesn’t seem right, does it, all these nice places being snapped up by investors, not families that actually want to live in them.’

Lucy made tea and sat down as soon as the hot water was in the pot. She felt dizzy and sick. ‘I begged Derek to go higher but these people were determined to get it at any price. Money really does seem to be of no object to them.’

‘Awful. Excuse me a moment.’

She just managed to reach the downstairs loo before she threw up and came back to the kitchen looking even paler.

‘Oh my God, you’re pregnant again, aren’t you?’

The potter nodded, dabbing her lips with a bit of kitchen paper.

‘Just, I think. Started feeling bad yesterday and today… well, it’s really started again.’

‘Does Bob know?’

‘No, and you mustn’t mention it to anyone until I get it confirmed. Oh, I hated the morning sickness the first time round.’

‘Me too. Do you want another kid?’

Ernie, Lucy’s boy, was just three and best friends with Ginny’s daughter, Charlie.

‘I think so. Yes, of course. It’s lovely for Ernie to have a brother or sister but I’m not sure how Bob will feel. He loves being a dad but doesn’t do that much parenting apart from paying the bills.’

‘Old school?’

‘Dickensian, love.’

She started pouring the tea and went on, ‘So, what are you going to do about moving? Is it so bad up there?’

‘With the birds, yes. But it’s the house too. I want to have a fresh start and really let myself go with the design. Can’t with that place.’

Ginny was now successfully established as an interior designer in the area although her designs were not to Lucy’s taste.

‘Well, if I hear of anything I’ll let you know. And I’ll ask Bob to keep an ear out. People often talk about such things over a drink. Maybe someone’s heard of something or is thinking of moving. Perhaps you could get in before it hits the market.’

‘That would be excellent. Oh, I’d love another baby. Hadn’t thought about it much but now you’re up the duff, I’m a little envious.’

‘Did you…oh, wait.’ Lucy dashed off again and heard, through the loo door, Ginny say, ‘Maybe not that envious….
