Chapter Eighteen
I saw Luke on Thursday, but after a night of no sleep, I wasnât in the mood to fake anything, let alone being totally immune to him. I grumped my way through the day keeping my head down, but by Friday, I was kind of psyched up.
I'd come to a realisation somewhere along the way - this was a bad idea, and I liked that! I'd played the martyr card a little too long and after nearly years of isolation and anger, I was much more prepared to fight. I was mentally way stronger than I used to be, and wanted to push back a little. So... I was rebelling, secretly.
I got out my practice kit on Friday morning and I wasnât quite so cautious this time. What was the worst she could do to me now? Yell? Throw me out? Maybe, but that wasnât her style. Image was everything and she had to present a good one. Chucking her seventeen-year-old daughter onto the streets was so not going to do her any favours.
I didnât have to be afraid anymore!
Take my tennis away? Meh, I'd done one crappy school lesson. No loss.
She had nothing on me now, nothing.
So, on Friday afternoon, I was there and ready before Luke. And I kind of enjoyed his look of surprise. Messing with him was actually fun. I needed more of that. All those months I'd spent keeping boys at a distance? Waste of time.
There was a big red button in my brain that said, âDonât push.â That meant opening myself up to other giving other people some element of control, but did it really have to be that way? No. Not anymore. I was in control now, I was older and smarter and as long as I didnât give away my power, then it was mine to wield.
Okay, maybe I was being a bit dramatic, but that was how I felt. And so, when Luke came on to the court and looked surprised to see me, I couldnât help getting a little bit high off the fact I was there because I wanted to be, and no one else got a say in it.
My life, my rules.
