Chapter Seventeen
Ardan stared down with an odd sense of helplessness at the mark on his arm. While he had sensed the residual presence of the curse at the cottage and again at the portal, all traces of Jules had disappeared, as if she were too far from him to track.
Had they made it to the Winter Court? Lyric had closed the portals, but if Jules were in Winter, anywhere in Faerie really, the bond would cry out to him through the curse. It could only mean that she remained in the human realm. Where he could only guess. Wherever she was, it was far enough away to avoid his detection.
Had she returned to that prison the humans dared to call a learning institution? How could anyone learn anything about the world if they were closed off from it, forbidden to experience its many virtues...and vices? But perhaps the humans enjoyed being slaves in their own world. Who was he to judge?
With a sigh, he turned toward the campus where he had found Jules McKinnon only days ago and tricked her into Faerie with promises of reuniting her with Ivy. He had made good on his promise. Jules simply hadn't asked enough questions before entering into an agreement with him. Well, when he found her, he would release Jules from their contract and retract the curse. Now that he realized he might have actual feelings for his princess, he understood how cursing her best friend and commanding her to spy for him might be a bit of a moral gray area…
What could he say? He had trust issues.
Ardan could feel the unpleasant sting of the iron gate that surrounded Kingston Academy. It was uncomfortable but bearable. To Unseelies, iron was a nuisance but was rarely ever lethal. Still, the safest place for any mortal was inside these gates. Or perhaps a human prison. The Gothic buildings of the campus were visible in the rolling hills ahead as the sun rose, casting shadows across the ground. He was just about to fade inside when he heard hushed voices somewhere in the distance.
Ivy?
He would recognize that exasperated tone anywhere. Ardan smiled, his heart rate speeding forward. What the...? He held his hand over his chest, examining the strange, fluttering palpitations that had suddenly plagued him. A single thought kept replaying through his mind.
Would Ivy be happy to see him?
Ivy was never happy to see him, so he couldn't be certain why his body had chosen this particular moment to act of its own accord. Trying to ignore the bothersome feeling, he darted toward the sound of Ivy's voice. Upon further examination, he could hear two sets of footsteps, and overhead, he saw Queen Lyric's messenger owl flitting from tree to tree.
"Ivy?" he called. "Jules? Is that you?"
The footsteps ceased. Voices whispered.
Suddenly, Ivy's guard burst through a copse of greenery, ready to protect his princess. When he saw it was Ardan, he stopped short, his expression fading from lethal to complete surprise. In fact, the guard was so taken aback, Ardan was a bit irritated.
