CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“How many, do you think?” Benjy was trying not to let his face turn that same sour note. She called him out on it every time for some reason.

“Too many.” Jennie shook her head. “I guess not enough for the US government to get involved in helping them. These orcs are pieces of work.”

There were plenty of farms in the area. They were cattle ranches for the most part, using the open landscape to their benefit. The orcs had bled them all dry. They would need to find more food elsewhere. Despite the farms playing a massive role in the area, much of the land was designated as national parks, leaving the creatures no large clumps of humans to attack when they were in the mood for something that could fight back.

Benjy was starting to understand that about them. They didn't mind slaughtering the livestock when they found it. He and Jennie had found piles of bones all over the landscape where they’d raided the ranches and consumed their feasts.

The orcs preferred humans, giving them special places of honor. Their bones, anyway. Benjy assumed they didn't want to let the meat go to waste. Not all of them had places of honor on the stacks of skulls. Most had their bones thrown in with the cattle.

“What do you figure that means?” Jennie nudged Luna away from the nearest stack and led them back to the road.

“The human bones in with the slaughtered cattle?” Benjy tilted his head. “I guess what little I know about how the orcs think and live makes me an expert since I don't think anyone else is studying them.

“From our experience with them in the pass, I would say they honor people who fight against them, no matter how futile the effort is. They won't let the meat go to waste, but they don't bother cracking the bones to eat the marrow. Not of the warriors they respect. Those who don't fight are thrown in with the livestock.”

“Fucking sick creatures,” Jennie muttered. “I guess it doesn't matter to them that everyone they run into isn't willing to fight. They only want to survive.”

“Yeah.” Benjy sniffed and scratched his jaw. His scraggly goatee was growing into a beard. It looked better than the goatee, but it wasn't quite as full and powerful as other beards he'd seen. His mother said he'd grow into it eventually, but Benjy had his doubts.

“Sickening. Then again, they began as pigs destined for slaughter. I figure that's about all there is to their culture. Give them a few thousand more years, and they'll hold elections and develop religions and such.”

Jennie shook her head.

“What?”

“Doesn't seem right to make jokes when so many people are dying all around us, is all.”

Benjy raised an eyebrow and nodded. She was right about that. He was becoming desensitized to all the violence and chaos. It was easy to forget those bones all belonged to people who had lives, happiness, dreams, and the like before the orcs showed up.
