Erik sat at the counter in the kitchen, a green smoothie and Emily’s book open in front of him. He flipped through the pages like it was a magazine and he was looking at the pictures.

Didier glanced at him a few times as he put together a cheese plate. Lottie was coming over to tell them about her weekend since she wasn’t in the office today. He added the olives he knew Lottie liked as well as some slices of fresh baguette he’d picked up earlier that day. The champagne was chilling in the refrigerator—he had a feeling they were going to be celebrating Lottie’s engagement. And then later, he was going to celebrate with Emily.

He’d reserved a hotel room for them, just in case. For two days, also just in case.

If only he felt like celebrating.

All day Didier didn’t feel right. At first he thought it was just seeing Emily on the cover of her book with that sal con she was going to marry, but as the day progressed, his chest began to feel more compressed, as if something large was sitting on it.

It worried him—so much that he even considered calling his doctor.

But what good would that do? The man would refer him to someone in Chicago, or insist he return to France. And he didn’t need restrictions put on him, especially restrictions that could come between him and Emily.

She was the best thing about his day. He loved that Erik was there, and that he worked with Jamie and Lottie and Rachel, but Emily… To see her every day was the most precious of gifts.

Erik closed the book with a definitive sound and pushed it aside. “The ideas are lacking but the writing is good.”

Didier raised his brow as he set three glasses on the tray to carry into the living room. “You read enough of it to know that?”

“I read the whole thing. I read fast.” He picked up his smoothie and took a large gulp. “The writing is her, I think. It was like the sample of her previous books that I checked out. It’s friendly and approachable. I liked it. But the guy I’m not sure about. They might have had a relationship, but I don’t think they loved each other.”

Curious about the kid’s perception but also feeling a pang in his chest, he paused. When he felt stable, he looked up from his preparations. “What makes you say that?”

Erik waved at the book. “In the book, they list what each of them brought to the table as important to them, and neither of them had love on their list. How can you be in a relationship without loving the other person?”

Didier shrugged. “People do it all the time.”

“It doesn’t make sense.” Erik frowned at him. “Has she said how she feels about you?”

That was the last thing he was going to get into with his young friend this evening. “You are very passionate about this book and Emily. Perhaps it is because of her sister?” he said to deflect the question.
