Chuene selected the primary course, and, not surprisingly, the IAAF tested Semenya the day after their meeting.

In early September, the IAAF confirmed its testing of Semenya and released the following appropriately inconclusive and measured statement: “We can officially confirm that gender verification test results will be examined by a group of medical experts. NO decision on the case will be communicated until the IAAF has had the opportunity to complete this examination.”32 Thus the IAAF did nothing to clear up questions regarding what Semenya did and did not know about the testing, but it appears that she was kept mostly in the dark about the types of tests and the intended uses of the results. This was confirmed on September 19, 2009, when Chuene admitted that he had lied to Semenya about the types of tests performed.33 The complete details of what transpired beneath the sporting, media, cultural, political, and technoscientific circuses over the following months will probably never be fully disclosed, but when Semenya’s attorney, Greg Nott, acknowledged that “direct negotiations with the IAAF representatives, through the mediator, [had] been ongoing for 10 months … in Monaco, Istanbul and Paris,” it was clear that the resolution of the case was as much about testing as it was about politics.34

On July 6, 2010, the IAAF released the briefest of press releases, indicating that “the process initiated in 2009 in the case of Caster Semenya (RSA) has now been completed. The IAAF accepts the conclusion of a panel of medical experts that she can compete with immediate effect.”35 No information was ever released to the public about the testing or how these tests informed decisions regarding Semenya’s ability to compete. Of course, the Semenya case raises a host of interesting questions about sex, gender, politics, race, and the body in a sporting context. But can her case push toward revolutionizing how publics, sport governing bodies, and competitors themselves understand the problematic workings of gender and sex within the tradition-laden world of sport?
