THEY HEADED OUTSIDE together, tightening their coats with a shiver as they stepped onto the frosted grass. It crunched beneath their boots, patches of silver and shadow in the moonlight. It would be snowing before long. Already, the first tiny flakes were starting to fall.
âYou need a ride home?â Gabriel asked, lifting his head to the sky. âI was going to train for a while, but if you wanted to head backââ
âMr. Alden?â
He glanced over his shoulder to see a slim figure heading towards themâthe silhouette of a young woman, materializing from the shadows. Sheâd been wandering around the campus, hoping to see a few of those snowflakes herself. But sheâd paused when the door to one of the cottages swung open, piercing the darkness with a splinter of light. Sheâd been surprised to recognize one of the men whoâd stepped outside. She was too far away still, to see the other.
âI thought it was you,â she said with a rare smile, moving closer. Her long hair spilled loose around her shoulders, catching the silver light. âI just drank the last of that teaââ
She stopped abruptly upon seeing Alexander, the smile freezing on her face.
ââwhatâs he doing here?â
The shifter froze where he was standing, looking like heâd give anything in the world to be sitting back in jail. He was about to say as muchâthat bristling defensiveness rising to the tip of his tongueâbut he caught himself, forcing a cordial smile instead.
âHello, Elise.â
Gabriel stepped between them with a quick smile. âHe actually works here,â he teased, trying to keep things light. âSomething you repeatedly refuse, in spite of our sparkling hospitality.â He paused a moment before continuing. âIf you ever do decide to head into the OratoryâAlex will help you. Iâve asked him to be your mentor.â
She turned from one to the other, looking like the devil herself. âAnd why would you do a thing like that?â she asked in a whisper. Before the assassin could answer, she pointed a finger at Alexanderâs chest. âHe offered you a promotion, because he doesnât know any better. But we both know the truth about you. Donât we, Alex?â
Beneath the gathering clouds, the shifter went very pale.
âIâve said I was sorry, so many times.â His eyes found hers, shining and raw. âIâve sent you letters. Iâve come by the house. If you would just let me explainââ
âThere is nothing to explain!â she hissed, jabbing that finger into his chest. âDo you hear me?! There is nothing you can say that can make it any better! You want to spin me some story, Hastings? How about I just do it for you. You got your chance to leaveâand you left. Thatâs it.â
Gabriel stood between them, feeling like there was a chapter heâd missed.
Yes, the shifter had been transferred to Guilder. And yes, heâd hopped on the bus. But he hadnât been alone. His twin sister had gone with him. Another shifter had gone as well. This girl wasnât railing against either of them. It was Alexanderâspecifically.
