THEY HEADED OUTSIDE together, tightening their coats with a shiver as they stepped onto the frosted grass. It crunched beneath their boots, patches of silver and shadow in the moonlight. It would be snowing before long. Already, the first tiny flakes were starting to fall.

“You need a ride home?” Gabriel asked, lifting his head to the sky. “I was going to train for a while, but if you wanted to head back—”

“Mr. Alden?”

He glanced over his shoulder to see a slim figure heading towards them—the silhouette of a young woman, materializing from the shadows. She’d been wandering around the campus, hoping to see a few of those snowflakes herself. But she’d paused when the door to one of the cottages swung open, piercing the darkness with a splinter of light. She’d been surprised to recognize one of the men who’d stepped outside. She was too far away still, to see the other.

“I thought it was you,” she said with a rare smile, moving closer. Her long hair spilled loose around her shoulders, catching the silver light. “I just drank the last of that tea—”

She stopped abruptly upon seeing Alexander, the smile freezing on her face.

“—what’s he doing here?”

The shifter froze where he was standing, looking like he’d give anything in the world to be sitting back in jail. He was about to say as much—that bristling defensiveness rising to the tip of his tongue—but he caught himself, forcing a cordial smile instead.

“Hello, Elise.”

Gabriel stepped between them with a quick smile. “He actually works here,” he teased, trying to keep things light. “Something you repeatedly refuse, in spite of our sparkling hospitality.” He paused a moment before continuing. “If you ever do decide to head into the Oratory—Alex will help you. I’ve asked him to be your mentor.”

She turned from one to the other, looking like the devil herself. “And why would you do a thing like that?” she asked in a whisper. Before the assassin could answer, she pointed a finger at Alexander’s chest. “He offered you a promotion, because he doesn’t know any better. But we both know the truth about you. Don’t we, Alex?”

Beneath the gathering clouds, the shifter went very pale.

“I’ve said I was sorry, so many times.” His eyes found hers, shining and raw. “I’ve sent you letters. I’ve come by the house. If you would just let me explain—”

“There is nothing to explain!” she hissed, jabbing that finger into his chest. “Do you hear me?! There is nothing you can say that can make it any better! You want to spin me some story, Hastings? How about I just do it for you. You got your chance to leave—and you left. That’s it.”

Gabriel stood between them, feeling like there was a chapter he’d missed.

Yes, the shifter had been transferred to Guilder. And yes, he’d hopped on the bus. But he hadn’t been alone. His twin sister had gone with him. Another shifter had gone as well. This girl wasn’t railing against either of them. It was Alexander—specifically.
