Mackenzie

“You found your mate,” Evan said with a grin as he sat down on the massive chair that seemed to dominate the living room. “How do you feel?”

“About as shocked as you feel.” I grinned. “I knew how I felt about him before we actually met.”

“Because he held you close when you were unconscious.”

“I guess so. It’s so weird.”

“A mating happens fast; just one touch and you're connected.”

“I want to be with him all the time but…”

“You feel guilty?”

“Yeah.”

“Kira wouldn't want you to feel that way. You know that right?”

“Tell that to my head.”

“What about your wolf?”

“She’s accepted him. She wants to jump him every time he's close.”

Evan laughed. “Do we need to talk about the birds and the bees?”

I blushed. “I know about sex.”

“Do you really? How?”

“Books.”

Evan burst out laughing and I glared at him. “Boy, are you in for a surprise.”

“Can we talk about something else please?” I snapped.

“What if I start shouting at you again for your reckless behaviour?”

“Pass,” I bit my lip. “How about I tell you about my mum and her new man?”

“What?”

“She’s been seeing Howard.”

“Your alpha?”

“Yes, crazy right. They’re getting married.”

“Wow, go auntie Eve.” He chuckled.

“She only told me today.”

“Why did they keep it a secret?”

“She said she was scared of telling me and Kira because she didn't want to upset us.”

“She’s almost as stupid as you.”

“I'll tell her you said that.”

“I'll deny it.”

“She’d believe you too. Butter wouldn't melt for you in her eyes.”

“I'm perfect.”

I rolled my eyes. “Why are you rushing home?”

“I have things to take care of.”

“That sounds cryptic. What are you hiding?”

He shrugged, “Nothing.”

I can tell he’s lying but he seems on edge and I don't want to push him. He’d talk to me if he wanted to. “We're going to Gabe’s house when you leave.” I found myself saying.

“I heard. Are you worried?”

I nodded. “I'm so out of my depth with this whole mating thing. I didn't expect it.”

“Fate always has plans for us. I told you this.”

“Yeah, but I decided I didn't want a mate. I like being alone.”

“I guess it's tough on you that you met Gabe then.”

I sighed. “I already feel dependent on him. I don't like the feeling.”

“He will be feeling exactly the same.”

“Yeah?”

“Can't you tell?”

“I try not to focus too much on his feelings because they mess with mine.”

“You mean it makes you horny.”

“Evan!” I screeched.

“Mackenzie, it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Once he's claimed you everything will calm down.”

“How do you know that?”

“I read books.” He chuckled.

Footsteps distracted me and I knew it was Gabe before he even entered the room.

“Hey,” he greeted. He came to sit beside me. Picking up my hand, he linked his fingers with mine.

“What's wrong?” I asked him. I could sense there was something.

“Simon is dead.”

I stared at him in shock. “How?”

“He managed somehow to get a blade and slit his own throat.”

“Okay, so he's not dead, dead. He’ll regenerate.”

His eyes locked with mine. “I staked him through the heart. He isn't coming back.”

I ripped my hand from his and stood up.
