I spent that night, and the next seven nights, at the clinic, letting Dr. Kyle offer her healing touch to me.
Tonight, we had followed our usual routine.
After dinner and tea, I had laid out on her couch as she sat on her chair. I permitted her to place her hands on me, one under my neck and the other on my forehead. Then she would sip or drink as much of my emotions as she wanted to.
Invariably, memories tumbled out as well, and I let her digest those too, sift them out. Process it the way she does. The process is different for each empath.
For her, she described it as sifting through grains of sand, letting the waste fall through, looking for just the right treasure. The way she described it reminded me of how Corbin trawled through her catâs litter box.
It seemed a long process every time, but I didnât mind waiting. Itâs not like I had any place to be.
On the first night there, I had shown her the business card Rigel had given me, and asked if sheâd heard that word before, or heard of a healing agency that perhaps catered to the Remnant God tribes.
Sheâd said she didnât recognize the agency, though if he were a Salaman, they might indeed be healers for the older races. âI donât know, Vesper,â sheâd said. âI have nothing against the older races. Truly. I support the idea of unification and sharing this world with them.â
Sheâd said it as if the Remnant waited for permission to exist in the world that they had once ruled.
âHowever,â she continued, âhow well could they know and heal Human physiology? Psychology? They operate on a completely different plane.â
âOh, how so?â I had asked.
âOh, you know,â she had said with a flick of her wrist.
âNo, really. What did you mean?â
âWellâ¦one person tried to get their cancer healed and were flat out refused. Someone else asked, and they were healed. I mean, really. Thereâs no logic to it. Besides, I like to think itâs the placebo effect, and the fact that they just want to be worshiped.â
âIn the olden times, Humans used to ask for healing from them. There are stories of the miracles they performed on a routine basis.â
âVesper, really,â sheâd tsked. âI didnât think you of all people would be one of the Worshipers?â Sheâd laughed to herself, clearly thinking that I agreed with her viewpoint. âOh, and letâs not forget those stories of war and famine and plagues because of their pettiness and infighting.â
I didnât need to be a Worshiper to know that Human history didnât fare much better in terms of pettiness and infighting.
âAnd, I have no doubt that they can perform âmiraclesâ in the same way that we,â she had gestured to the both of us, âcan help unravel emotions. Doesnât make us gods!â
Dr. Kyle had been closer to the truth than she would ever know. She had gotten increasingly hostile the more I brought up the Remnant Gods, souring her usually fresh lavender and chamomile scent, so Iâd learned to leave it alone.
