LOOKOUT

Lookout is vital to safe flight. It needs practice largely because we aren’t really ‘designed’ to be up in the air. Our field of vision is far smaller than most birds, our sharpest visual resolution much less acute and limited to a smaller arc, and our eyes work best at close range. In addition, most of the visual cues which we use for what might be termed ‘hand to hand’ fighting on the ground, are absent in the air. In any event, aircraft more than a few miles away are not always the easiest things to spot, particularly if they are either on or just below the horizon. If they are on a collision course they stay in the same position relative to us and just get bigger, but this increase in size doesn’t become really noticeable until they are already quite close. So if you aren’t looking in the right general direction at the right moment you may not notice anything. If the object is fast-moving that can mean even less time for identifying the nature and seriousness of the threat, working out the best avoiding action and then getting the glider to do it.

Head-on collision. Very high closing speeds.
