Chapter 15
âWe donât need any more decorations, Elena,â Rory said. She held the other end of the long garland I was stringing over the fireplace mantle. âThe castle is already decorated.â
âIt isnât right,â I muttered, standing back to eye the boughs. With a discerning eye, I adjusted them slightly to the right, then nodded. âPerfect. Now, help me with the slush.â
âSlush?â Rory trailed after me, her eyebrows furrowed deeply. As we entered the kitchen, her eyes went wide. âHoly alcoholic, girl! What exactly are you planning? I thought we were just having a quiet evening.â
I glanced over at the rows of booze Iâd laid out next to shot glasses and two litre bottles of Sprite and Pepsi.
âYouâll see,â I practically sang as I reached into the freezer and pulled out a beef bucket.
Roryâs face when I turned and placed the bucket on the counter was priceless.
âItâs not beef,â I said with a laugh, prying the top off the bucket. âItâs slush. Look.â
She glanced inside and her forehead smoothed out. âAlcoholic, I presume?â
âYou presume correctly.â I moved it over to the other counter and began stabbing it with a butter knife. âYou have to loosen it up.â
Rory grimaced at each stab.
âHere,â I said, passing her the knife. âYou finish this.â
I went back to the freezer and pulled out the star of the night. With a grin that would delight the Devil himself, I unwrapped the frozen guest of honor.
âAre you planning to cook that?â Rory asked, adorable in her confused state. âItâs a little late to take it out. Everyone will be here soon.â
I glanced over my shoulder and smiled widely, then shook my head. âNo, Iâm not cooking it.â
Without a word of explanation for my bizarre behavior, I placed the fish on top of a platter and carried it proudly to the center of the table. Back and forth I went, grabbing shot glasses and a tall bottle of dark rum as the door opened and my mate and friends arrived.
âHey!â Daniella called out, grinning. âWeâre having a party?â She glanced down at her dark jeans and off the shoulder sweater. âYou should have told me. I would have dressed up.â
I eyed her couture jeans, high-end ankle boots, and top of the line sweater and just shook my head. âYou look great, Dani.â
In contrast, I was wearing black leggings, wool socks pulled up high, and a long tunic with buffalo plaid sleeves and pockets I loved. My hair was in a messy bun that wasnât even artistically done.
Bash sauntered up and pulled me into his arms. He pressed a kiss to my temple and murmured, âYou feeling up for this?â
I twisted to catch his gaze and nodded. âThis is exactly what I need right now.â
He watched me for a long moment, searching my eyes for any sign of grief or pain, then grinned. âOkay, then. What are we celebrating?â
âTake a seat everyone,â I announced, stepping out of Bashâs arms.
I heard rumblings of âIs that a fish?â and laughed.
âIn Newfoundland, we celebrate Tibb's Eve on December 23rd.
