Chapter 20

Cooley pulled her headphones off as the plane coasted into LAX. It had been over a month and a half, and Cooley’s responsibilities had halted every planned trip to meet up with Sahara. She was in desperate need of some sexual healing, and she really was missing her woman.

Sahara’s last two shows were in L.A., so Cooley figured that would be the perfect time to meet up. She decided the best way was to surprise Sahara. Cooley retrieved her rolling bag from the overhead bin and headed off the plane.

As soon as she turned her phone on, it began to blare. The demands of being the manager of two of the hottest new celebrities were starting to take their toll on Cooley. Her phone never stopped ringing. Her days consisted of nonstop meetings, phone calls, e-mails and outings. An opportunity to join forces with a firm out of New York was starting to sound better by the day.

Cooley took a limo to the venue where Sahara was performing and flashed her all-access pass at the back door. Cooley could hear Sahara’s voice echoing through the halls. Cooley greeted various celebrities and their entourages, along with the men and women who worked hard to make the show a reality. Cooley quickly nodded, gave daps, and made phone gestures to those she planned on calling. She was in a rush to make it to Sahara’s dressing room before Sahara got off the stage.

Cooley laughed and chatted with Linda, Sahara’s on-the-road vocal coach and some of her staff. They watched on the television as Sahara finished her last song and took her final bow. They all dispersed to get into their places when Sahara came off the stage. Cooley had sworn them to secrecy about her arrival.

Cooley sat on the couch, facing the door. She heard Sahara’s entourage making its way to the dressing room. She was excited to see her woman. The door opened, and Sahara walked in, talking to Tamera, one of her principal dancers. Then Tamera’s face dropped when she saw Cooley. Confused by the look, Sahara turned to see Cooley grinning on the couch.

“Carla!”

Cooley found it funny that Sahara was in shock. Sahara couldn’t move. She looked back at Tamera. Tamera forced a smile.

Sahara looked back at Cooley. “Oh my God, what are you doing here? I thought you weren’t going to be able to make it.” The expression on Sahara’s face was priceless.

“It’s called a surprise.” Cooley stood up. She paused. Something didn’t feel right.

“Well, I’ll see you two later,” Tamera called. Cooley looked at Tamera, who quickly averted her eyes. She walked out of the room.

Cooley and Sahara stood in silence for a moment before the door swung open. Sahara’s hair and makeup artist quickly began to remove her stage clothes and makeup. Cooley sat back down on the couch.

The room was soon filled with Sahara’s team. They all laughed and joked with Cooley and Sahara, filling Cooley’s ears with stories from the road.

“NYC had to be the best,” said Jahil, one of Sahara’s dancers.
