In another landscape inside Ingrid’s mind, she and Elder Ivar were training determinedly. Ingrid was hidden in the snow, half buried, and Elder Ivar was beside her, also lying covered in snow. Before them spread a beautiful lake with a bluish-white surface.

“Take a deep breath and let the cool air fill your lungs. It will make aiming and keeping your arm steady easier,” he told her.

“Master, this shot is especially difficult,”

“You have been able to hit the bull’s eye at four hundred, four hundred and fifty, five hundred, and five hundred and fifty paces. I do not see why you cannot hit another one at six hundred paces,” Ivar said to cheer her.

“The distance is huge. Five hundred already seemed so far…”

“And you managed to hit the center.”

“After weeks of trying…” Ingrid complained.

“You will be able to make it. Forest Sniper is one of the most difficult Specializations to achieve since it requires a hawk’s eye and remarkable dexterity with the longbow. You have the qualities required to reach this specialty—I can see it and I feel it, otherwise I would not waste my time training you in it. There are other Archery Specializations we can try instead.”

“Thank you, Master, it’s just… that… between the wind, the falling snow… the distance of six hundred paces, and that I barely see the target, I’m not at all sure.”

“Remember that we can repeat the training as many times as necessary. We are in your mind. This is a great advantage over the real world, where we would have to leave it for another day and the conditions would vary. Here the conditions and time remain more constant and we can repeat the exercise over and over.”

“That’s true.”

“May I ask why of all the Archery Specializations you wanted to begin with this one?” Ivar asked her.

“Being as I am an Archer of the Wind, which is short range Archery specialty, I preferred to start with its opposite—the longer range of the Sniper.”

Ivar nodded.

“I see. It makes sense.”

“If I manage to master this specialty, I’d like to continue with Natural Marksman or Infallible Marksman.”

“And why is that?”

“They’re two specializations I should be good at, since they’re similar to Archer of the Wind.”

“Similar does not mean they will be easier. Natural Marksman is a short-range specialty, true, but it requires some instincts that not everyone possesses. A Natural Marksman achieves such a strong connection with the bow that he or she is able to release and hit the target almost subconsciously. A Natural Marksman releases faster than speech and makes a bull’s eye almost every time.”

“Yes, Master, and it would be a great complement to the specialty I already have. I hope to have the skill to do so.”

“We will find out when we get down to it,” Ivar replied and made a sign to keep aiming with the special sniper’s bow.

“But in case you are unable to develop the Natural Marksman skill, you have Infallible Marksman, which, from what I have seen of your technique—which is frankly very good—I do not think you would have any trouble achieving.
