A gasp sounds from behind me, and I jump out of my skin before whirling around. Jackâs so close that our foreheads bump together.
âOw!â I rub at the spot and squint at him. âWhat the hell, Jack?â
âI should be asking you the same question.â He points to my screen. âFix that right now.â
âNo. Thatâs how it has to be.â
âSays who?â Jack huffs and snatches my coffee cup off the desk and peers inside before taking a sip. âYouâre the writer. Now write it to be happy.â
âPatience.â I stand up and snake an arm around his lean waist. His sweater is cold from being in the snow, but his skin is warm. âI told you. Everythingâs going to work out okay in the end. They just have to hurt a little first.â
âYouâre a cruel, cruel man, Luka Summers.â Jack takes another drink of my coffee. The little thief. âI must say, itâs very like the son of Hades to betray someone, though. Even if it does make me sad.â
âWerenât you the one who mocked the idea of a happily ever after between them when I first told you about this book?â
Jack blinks at me. âI donât recall such an incident.â
I move closer to him before brushing my lips along his jawline. âLiar.â
He shudders and presses his head to mine. âOkay. Perhaps youâre right. But opinions can change⦠just like people can.â
âI didnât expect to see you here so early,â I say, holding him a little tighter. My dream left me feeling off, and his presence helps take away some of that unease. As his scent of pine and berries tickles my nose, the knots untangle in my gut.
âWould it be cheesy to say I missed you?â Jack tangles his fingers in my shirt.
I grab hold of his chin and force his eyes to mine. âNot at all. I missed you too.â
He swallows and looks as if he wants to say something. But then he retreats. Literally. He pulls from my arms and walks toward the kitchen. âAre there any pretzels left? I need some crack.â
I chuckle, though it sounds a bit sad to my ears.
Jack no longer runs from intimacy like he did only a few days ago, but he still has a way to go. Maybe heâll never get there. Itâs easier if he stays firm on his decision to keep a distance between us. For both of us.
âLook in the plastic container by the coffeepot,â I tell him as I head that way. Since he stole my coffee, I need to get another cup. I enter the kitchen just in time to see him stuffing two pretzels into his mouth at once. âAre you sure itâs me you missed and not the tasty little treat?â
Jack smiles around his mouthful, his cheeks puffing out like a chipmunk.
I shake my head and fill another mug of coffee, then top off his cup. I add creamer to both of ours before going back into the living room. As usual, I donât hear his steps behind me, but I know heâs there.
