IT’S EASY TO SQUEEZE the whole tube into your hand, but overdoing it with product can ruin the texture of your hair, and screw up the whole look. Always begin by rubbing product, such as cream, serum, pomade, or wax between your hands. You’ll notice all professional stylists do this. If it looks gloopy and starts dripping off your palms, you’ve used too much. I’m going to use money to illustrate how much of each product should be applied.

SERUM: It only takes a dime-size amount. Avoid the root, as it can make hair look greasy.

WAX: A nickel-size portion. Warm it up properly to melt any lumps. This works well on short, cropped hair (think Audrey Hepburn with her elfin cut); be sure to apply outward from root to tip.

CREAM: Dollop the size of a quarter into your hand and it’s enough to define even long hair.

GEL: Perfect for a sleeked-back look (try a perfectly straight, center part, and remember to use a fine-toothed comb. Two quarters’ worth of gel is enough.

MOUSSE: My favorite product! I apply when my hair is damp, from root to tip, with my head upside down. It really lifts my hair and gives big volume with a matte texture. Pump a scrunched-up dollar-bill amount. For Texas-big hair, dry the hair after applying mousse, then reapply a slightly smaller dollop, brushing it through from the roots.
