Derivatives are financial instruments that derive their fundamental value from another financial instrument. They have a fierce reputation as chips for dangerous gambles and irresponsible trades. There is no doubt that they have been used for as such. However there are more mundane uses for them too. What are they? How are these used? What is a hedge fund manager thinking when he picks up these financial instruments?

I picked out a few commonly seen derivatives for inclusion into these pages. By no means should this be considered a deep dive into every derivative out there. However there are a few that people expect you to be familiar with if you want to spend time familiarizing yourself with and understanding the asset management world.
